A question to the Jag and the used car experts on here.

If I got either of the two cars above, both about 60,000 miles and 2009, what is the depreciation likely to be?

I can only compare them with M5's and 535d's which appear to hold their money well once the first two/three year sting has been taken out, but then I also have to bear in mind the traditional complete freefall of prices of big Jags.

But the XF does seem immensely popular which I assume will hold prices up.

What do others think?

I bought a 3.0XFS from new and sold it after 18 months with only 12k miles on the clock and I lost 18k in depreciation... So a grand a month from new... frown

Obviously rate of depreciation slows down on a used car... but in my experience Jags depreciate the same if not more quickly than other prestige brands.

Since posting the initial question on here I found a list of six depreciation beating cars to buy, the XF was number 6.

XFR a far more exciting car, but will lose more, due to it being a V8 petrol. XFS is a safer bet, but the extra fun of the XFR outweighs any small saving you may get in depreciation over choosing an XFS.

It was a very good car... Loved owning it but got seduced by an XK ... Which might depreciate even faster than the XF...

What you have to remember about the XF when comparing it to the 5 series is the equipment level. You have to make sure you are comparing like with like spec wise

I think you could be right about the test drive, that's what hooked me on the XK... Never tried the back seats down (I assume you mean the XF as the XK back seats aren't actually seats)

I made the same mistake.

Went in for an XF diesel - came out with an XKR.

Just bought 2 ex demo Jags, an XKR-S, 6 months old and 3k miles for 75k (list with extra's 98.5K) and an XFR 2012 model year for £45k (list 68K). I sold our XF SV8 (April 2008 car, the 4.2 S/Charged) for 18K and our 09/09 XKR for £35K.

I have penciled in the XFR to be worth about £25k when it gets to 3 years old and the XKR-S to be just under £40k at the same point. After the 3 year point I would expect them to drop by 15% in year 1 and then 10% p/a thereafter so the first 3 years are definitely the worst.

There are quite a few demo's of both XKR and XKR-S and XFR's coming onto the market in the next few weeks. I was also offer an XJ Supersport with quite a few extra's (list 98.5K) at 12 months old with 12 k miles for £50K, nearly bit but I knew the "enemy" would notice that whereas she thinks I have just added a few mods to the old XKR!

I hope the quality has improved since the early cars. I got myself a fully loaded premium luxury in April 2008 and the quality was appalling. Was a real shame, quality wise was the worse car I have ever had.

I had a 2010 XF and the quality was very high... Apart from Bluetooth to iPhone connection which was rubbish.

Is it worth stretching myself for or play it safe and easy with a 3.0d S?

I have just watched it again.

At first I thought the whistling noise was the supercharger sucking air in, but then I realised it was the sound of petrol being slurped at a vast rate rofltongue out

I need that car. And a tunnel.
