Am I unrealistic ?
Discussion
I am finally putting my XJR on the market. I have had it 5 years and its a very tough decision.
Am I being unrealistic with my asking price, Its insured at an agreed valuation of £8k, I have spent over 12k on it. Its a 98 with 62k on it.
Are there potential buyers out there who would pay £7k for it and have piece of mind that its a little bit different with upgrades and its condition and discreet styling, but more importantly its had everything done to it, and I mean everything regards work carried out for longevity of the bodywork, to all pre-emptive mechanical work and uncompromising spend on it generally ?
I think it's possibly the best example out there at the moment, if not, certainly one of the best.
Or due to the current financial climate are buyers opting to buy cheaper XJR's and taking a chance on potentially hefty bills ?
What do you reckon ?

Unfortunately 99% of car buyers confuse asking price with value. One look at a old XJ up for sale for that sort of money quite regardless of it's history or condition will get the standard response of - Ahh much? 7 grand fer an ole Jaaag? You're avin a bleedin larf intcha?
So you'll need to advertise it somewhere it's condition will be appreciated and you'l attract the more ahem.. discerning buyer. You could try the JEC classifieds - it may even be worth the club membership fee for a year to get access to them or www.carsandlassic. There's always lots of older X308s on there and plenty of those would seem the right car to go and look at from the discriptions, but even so not many of them seem to be selling.
Robert Hughes advertises what seem to be superb cars at premuim prices, but I don't think even he would ask that much for the car you describe and frankly at 7 grand you're up against some stiff competition. Have a look on Autotrader and see what XJ you could buy for the same money and compare those with the one you're thinking of selling.

i have bought 3 jaguars in the last 3 months
xjr 1998 75,000 miles £3k passed i took it for mot, no advisories but pads were low, hasnt had tensioners yet but otherwise A1
XJ 3.2 sport 1997 £900 8 months mot, tensioners belts and chains all done in last 6 months and anti roll bars and 4 new tyres, immaculate with everything working
xjr 199 162,000 mile £1400 belts and chains done in last 6 months. sunroof, premium sound, cruise control and everything works, motd and in great nick, needs a little bit of rust treatment on front arches and a front wheel bearing (quoted £200 + from Jagutek), but the wheels on it are worth more than i paid for the car.
i am going to keep the two xjrs and give the xj3.2 to my brother, both the xjrs are what i wanted, black with black leather interiors.
so 3 jags for £5500 which i am reasonably pleased with

Jaguar Steve gets exactly where I am coming from, the £2 or £3k cars have potential for big bills, throttle body, chains, suspensions, and then of course upgrades if you want them, whereas all this work has been done on my car. It depends what ypu want in the car and if you are gonna keep it. I will take your advice and look for the right buyer. I agree £7k is over optimistic.
Last September the right buyer offered me £7k, just can't get hold of him, he has a "stable" of Jaguars !

I know where you are coming from too. The three cars I have bought have all got full service history, all have been serviced regularly, the two with the higher mileages have both had chains, belts and tensioners done and are total value for money and cheap enough for me not to worry about if they need something expensive done. The 75,000 miles " keeper" I will upgrade as and when I want too and should last me a very long time. Two different views but when it comes to selling time it's like throwing money away as you will never recoup what you spend especially in this financial climate. At the moment I'm enjoying my way, I have a £10,000 budget and in the last year I have had a boxster, a cerbera, a 350z, a Subaru impreza, two chimaeras, I still have one, a range rover 4.6 vogue, an 850i BMW , and so far I haven't lost a penny.
Good luck with your sale, and if you ever want to let it go really cheap, let me know :-)

As I said the one I got the other day for 2K has full Jaguar service history including timing chainsWhen it comes to upgrades though that can be a very personal view point,
what you feel is essential another person might will choose other options
In fact on mine I expect I'll only go for the Manual gearbox and a Quaife diff
So have I really. I have had a quote for bottom pulley conversion, gearbox oil change, tensioners, chains, gaskets etc, water pump which I am going to have done at jagutech after they have done the wheel bearing on the new one, then I can give it a proper road test, and them decide if I will keep them both or not
Mine cost me £2k two weeks ago.
I bid more than that but when I discovered rattly chains the very kind vendor knocked the price of a chain set off for me.
So it's had the top tensioners done and a new set of lower suspension arms so now I want to get the geometry set up, two new front tyres and an aircon recharge and it'll be perfect.
Top class car for well under £3k.
ETA, it needs the upstream lambdas looked at as it's showing an error but the car's still very driveable.

Looking at the carsandclassic website is a decent insight. Based on what I see here I may torch it and claim the insurance....heh heh, that said I am going to be holding out a little while longer and possibly Ebay it with a £6k reserve and take it from there. When the level of work done is listed I reckon it may well go. I'll post back.
