2006 XK Ipod query

Hi all,
I joined PH last week to do some research and have today taken the leap of faith and bought an XK in midnight black and cant wait to take delivery of her next week. Its got 66000 on the clock which is a bit more than I wanted but comes with FSH from the dealer who originally supplied the car from new so thats a bit more reassuring.
Its in the same conditon as it was when they part x'd it and will now be valeted properly but looks the bees knees already. I paid £21k with a 1 yr warranty and forked out for an extra 3 years and tyre ins as they are almost new. Its a lovely car but I was disappointed to discover that there is bluetooth but no IPod connectivity on the sound system. I have an older Ipod nano and wondered if there is a low cost solution to this or is it back to dealer and pay a fortune? I am not bothered about controls, just as long as I can hear the music via the sound system.

Being my first performance car for a while, (owned an 1982 944 a while ago) do you guys have any advice I should take heed of? (Im 55 so not a boy racer)!

I've used a Dension Ice Link on a number of cars including my 2002 S Type, connects to the head unit through the aerial so much better than a transmitter type unit. You simply programme it to one of the FM pre sets and away you go. Control the iPod from a provided cradle which will charge it as well.
Last one bought brand new off ebay for a tenner, think they're about £40 new.

Happy to help! I struggled to find a good option for this without going the full Jag ACM unit, my Jag had no Bluetooth either so had to fit that as well. Have since upgraded to a Parrott 9200 which does it all and the Dension is doing sterling service in the Range Rover Sport driven by SWMBO. The pics below shows what it looked like in the Jag, mounted it on a Plummer console to keep it tidy. The Dension came with cradles to fit all types of iPod.
Nice! My only concern is how much work it will be to connect. Do I need to buy one with harness and plugs for a jag, and do all jags use the same connections? Presumably I have to connect to rear of the unit somehow?

Don't panic! The Dension only requires three connections to the loom, a permanent +ve, a switched +ve and an earth. I got those from the connector plug behind. The car aerial plugs into the Dension, then a lead from that plugs into the head unit. Taking the centre dash apart was easy on the S which is pretty much the same as the old shape XK8, not sure how much has changed with yours but took loads of pics as I went which I'm happy to post up if you think it would help. Don't forget the radio code if it needs one!

Was the sound quality good? I hear that it can be distorted with some fm devices. I have seen another device called a connect2 which allows you to connect using the cd player connection and also gives you full control from the steering wheel. Presumably with the Dension you will still need to use the iPod to change tracks?

I used to have a Connects 2 in a Discovery where it took the place of the CD changer, that also worked well but the functions were a bit limited and you ended up grabbing the iPod for certain functions. At least with the Dension, apart from volume, everything was on the iPod itself and as it was properly mounted, I was quite happy.
I'm no audiophile but I think the sound is fine and never had any interference problems at all, way better than using the headphone socket as a line-out.

I'm interested in how the OP gets on with this because the only thing that I need to make my 2007 XKR convertible, which I've had for 18 months, absolutely perfect is to have my i-pod connected to the sound system. Running a 6th gen iPod nano from in the ashtray the Parrot screen shows playlists and fully controls iPod. The hands free aspect is fabulous too with the noise cancelling mic proving top class.
The screen and remote control are both removable too.

I'd agree but as the OP already has bluetooth, it's a bit OTT. I moved the Dension into the RRS which had OE bluetooth and they work well together. Jaguar actually do an ipod connector for the early cars, i had it dealer fitted in my 07 XKR, it sounds amazing even although it doesn't offer the same level of control as the later system.
