X-type diesel glow plug wire

My X-type 2.0 diesel estate has melted its glow plug connecting cable, where it leaves the loom and joins the engine.

After reconnection, the dash indicator lamp works correctly but power is always fed to the plugs and after a few seconds the plastic connector starts to get very hot and smoke. If you remove the relay fuse when running there is a noticeable change in engine note as you are removing the load.

Is the relay getting stuck (I've tried tapping it), or is there another solenoid somewhere?
