Jaguar s type 2.7 d
Discussion
Hi all,i have just bought a 2005 2.7d S type with 80000 miles with full jag service history but it has a few problems which i hope that you can help me with.
When i took the car for a test drive the battery was flat but it started first time with a booster charger but it lacked power. The dealer sold it to me as a none runner and said he thought that it was turbo related but there were no fault codes stored, i used a memoscan U581 code reader and it did not show any faults. I later found out that you can do an on board diagnostic check,
The codes stored are. D900 D262 D752 D751 E511.
I took the car for a 7 mile drive and found that it had trouble getting up any hills but, it will go to 70mph+ on flat roads
There is no smoke coming from the exhausts. I thought that it felt as if the turbos were not working.
Going home, suddenly it came up with gearbox fault and the sport light on the button went off. and the car felt that it went in to limp mode, no other lights on dash except the amber warning light that came on with gearbox fault.
So i turned the car off and restarted and it was ok then when i was driving home it came on again. Could this be as a result of a bad battery?
When you remove the air cleaner and rev to the red line and take you foot off there is a what i can only describe as a gratting noise coming from the air intake, could this be turbo/bearing noise?
Oh and like a right plonker after all this i only managed to put the car in park when it was doing about 15/20mph hopefully i didn't damage anything.
Hope someone can help, all the best Marc:~)

Hi
I used to have a 2005 2.7D which lost both turbo's.
After collecting the car (AA waranty covered the bill), the car had no power, and like yours came up with a gearbox warning.
Garage (main dealer) obviously took the car back in, and what they claim the problem was, was a sticker had come off the air filter on the left had back and obstructed the air flow sensor, hence giving the ECU faulse readings. Car ran like a dream when I collected it a second time.
Like yours, this all happened at 80K!
They resolved the problem and I kept the car till 100k.
Best car I ever had, still miss it!

Hi all :~) thanks for your replies :~) .
I will get a new battery :~) but does anyone think that i should do a compression check on it? As i was told by the mechanic over the road that this is the first thing to check but i was always under the impression that a diesel engine with low compression is hard to start, hot or cold.
All the best Marc :~)

Hello, RoadRunner, Alot has gone on since my last post.. I replaced the nearside turbo and cleared the dpf, I also purchased Autoenginuity from Genden which is a fantastic bit of kit.
I got the car running fine BUT a few weeks later the car developed a top-end tapping sound which i thought was a stuck lifter.
To my surprise i put the car on ramps and stripped the top-end only to find out that it was ok.
So i drained the oil only to find the remains of bearing. I took the sump of and there was more bearing material in....BUGGER it :~(
It turns out that it has suffered main bearing faliure caused by the bearing moving and cutting of the oil hole to that bearing.
This is a common problem on these engines, as these bearing's have no tabs to located them.
They are held in by bearing crush. Over time and start stop driving, these fail.
I understand that the new engines are designed with tabs.
The next problem that i have found is the dealer's no STEALER'S do not sell bearings..What a bunch of *********************************!
So I bought another engine of Fleabay..They said that the bottom-end was fine but it had an injector fault, which damaged no 6 piston. The heads were off,i could see that number 6 piston was damaged but the bores were ok.
I only paid £110 for the engine but when i stripped the bottom-end. You guessed it, two main bearings had gone.. at least i have a lot of spares :~)
The good news is that my local engine shop, (Anglia Engines) say that although there are no bearings available they are sure that it is possible to mix and match.
I contacted many bearing manufacturers, one was King Bearings who are in the process of designing/manufacturing some.
My main problem at the momment is the weather, i am working outside.
This is going to take some time and i want to keep a photographic log, so people who need to rebuild these engines can.
I hope that i have not gone on too much ;~) and i will keep you posted on my progress.
All the best Marc :~)
