Hi all.

I am probably about to buy a 3 year old XJ Diesel. The main dealer has agreed to add a full 12 month mechanical warranty into the deal but is trying to charge me 400 odd quid for a pure guard paint protection.

What is it and is it any good/worth the money.

As an existing XJ owner I assume the TDVI jag is pretty good. Have an 2001 XJ sport at the mo owned from six months old.

Thanks in advance

Pat.

It costs the dealer £29.99, he pays his valeter a fiver to apply it. The valeter has literally only a few minutes to apply it (or it's not worth his while) so it's not done properly.

This 'paint protection' is the biggest rip-off the the motor trade today.

Four hundred fking quid? Jesus Christ! Explain to the salesman that you realise it's part of his pay plan and that he gets commission for selling thus bullst. It really is money for nothing for these salesmen.

Then go to the parts counter and buy the product yourself. At least you will spend the time to apply it properly and it will do its job, just like any other protectant product that you can buy in Halfords.

And the claim that it can help maintain resale value?

I'd recommend looking at the Xpel Ultimate paint protection film. Had it applied to my XK and, depite 4k motorway miles, not a single stone got through.

The paint is unmarked despite some quite nasty scuffs on the film that would have resulted in a large bonnet chip or dent.

Thanks for the honest replies.

I've already it got knocked off the deal, the mrs has a pack in the garage form her last new car (what a mug). I nicked a bit just to clean up me old car before the trade in .

Certainly not worth the money for a pre polish/protection and a posh bag of cleaning bits.

Cheers.

Pat.
