X350 4.2SE - why not?
Discussion
Can anybody make a cogent argument as to why buying this would be a bad idea?

I've put a deposit on it and failing anybody talking me out of it will be chopping in my 68,000 mile X Type 3.0l Sport Manual on it later this week.
This has primarily been motivated by me having my ankle fused earlier this year and feeling I need an auto. Having driven it though I love the thing and just want it. Which is a bit annoying because the X Type has been fantastic and I've just spent lots of money on it (transfer box, prop shaft, wheel bearings, suspension bushes, lambda sensors and tyres). I won't be getting any value for all of this when I chop it in, even though the place I'm doing the deal with is the same place that has done all the work.
The XJ is better for my foot, bigger, faster and no more costly to run. The X Type is trusted, has been nice to own, the 4WD comes in handy in the winter and has had lots of my money sunk into it.
I can't keep both because I don't have space for them. Also have an XK8 Convertible, an old Land Rover, a company Toyota and two motorcycles to keep happy. And a wife.
Somebody please talk sense to me!

if you can afford it, then the more toys the better. and if the wife doesn't say no either of course.
the bust up ankle is a perfect excuse too.
i would much rather have a x350 V8 any day of the week, than an x-type. there is simply no comparison. but i think you know that now!
how about some pictures to show off the new toy.

I've been looking at these too, a lot of car for the money.
I like the look of this one.

I've just bought a 4.2SE same spec and vintage but lower miles (69,500) from a dealer for £1k less than that. And mine has a full genuine Jag service history, this one has a couple of gaps, one service was completely missed. Personally I also dont like those wheels or the black steering wheel but thats just me.
Still looks like a lot of car for the money but I'd be checking it out very carefully.
Decent 4.2s are rare, I spent 3 months looking for mine (and it has a few problems but thats another story!).
Budget at least £1k on tp of the purchase price for things like wishbone bushes (~£200 per corner from independents, ~£500 from jag dealers) which at this age will probably be worn out at the rear, also check the brake disks - every one I looked at (apart from the one I bought) had knackered disks all round and crappy unbranded tyres.
Check that it had the spark plugs changed at the 73k service. You'll also need to factor in £500+ to have the gearbox fluid changed (not had mine done yet so cant give price) as Jag dealers dont do it and at this mileage its due. Mine has the jaguar lurch http://www.thelurch.com/ , this is a sure way of telling that the fluid hasnt been changed (but the computer needs to be reset at the same time to fix it).
Electrics can be tempremental and very sensitive to voltage drop so after buying step 1 should be a new battery ~£110 (more if you get it from halfords)
Check that it has a rear blind and that it works - easily fixed if it doesnt but good for a further discount as they stick. Also see if the door mirrors fold. One of mine doesnt but it wasnt a deal breaker, sometimes a squirt of oil will fix them.

ETA: Thats also a poverty spec model, it doesnt have the touch screen for Satnav, phone, stereo and climate control, almost a required item for this type of car. This makes it less desirable and should get a further discount. All of the 'extras' they list are I believe standard fit, apart from 'jaguar voice' but you wont miss that.
Just re-read your post as you've already stuck a deposit down its too late to negotiate the price down I guess. As long as you go into it with your eyes open as to running costs I am sure you will be fine. I love my XJ8 , you cant beat the waftability and performance.

We have agreed £4k plus my X Type, which I think is a decent deal. I have driven the car and it stops, goes, steers and changes gear as it should. No gearbox shunt, great braking performance, no knocks from the suspension on hard cornering. These things are more important to me than the touch screen. Having said that, yours sounds like one hell of a good deal.

Top buying sir! It's the same colour as my X-Type but supersized
Me, envious, maybe. I don't care for touchscreen faff myself. My phone is the best SatNav I've ever used!
Happy wafting
