XTYPE Weird Problem...

Hi :-)
Right then when to start. I have a 53 plate 2.0 Diesel. When I took it over to my mates he plugged in a fault code reader to clear an ABS fault..He plugged his reader (snapon) in to the diag port and when he tried to start it wouldnt fire just turn over really slow like a knackered battery in his words. Thought nothing of it as when the code reader was disconncted it started fine.
I forgot about the above and ordered a Synergy 2a box that arrived today. I fitted it no problem and this does exactly the same the car barely turns over. So I have fitted a new battery and now its STILL the same. If I disconnect it it starts fine.
Any idears where to start at all Ive tried a search but dont even know where to begin.

ETA - I have just pressed the stalk for the DTC codes and now get E510, 9318, E197 and the engine light is on. This wasnt on before I started :-(
