Xtype Diesel Fuel economy

Hi,
I have an Xtype 2.0 Diesel and I struggle to get 500 miles to a tank no matter what sort of driving im doing, think 483 was the record from full to light. Thats motorway never over 80 and around town changing at 2000rpm max.
I have noticed that my temp gauge is always on the first mark never gets hotter. Should the car hold temp in the middle, a friend said my thermostat is probably stuck open and this would effect the MPG the car is doing.
Does this sound right??
How many miles do others get per tank on the 2.0 and what's your temp showing.

Sounds like the ECU is being fooled into cold running and is on permanent enrichment. Has a friend followed you and seen lots of sootiness (black smoke even on light throttle)? Would be a decent reason for the lack of MPG. Have you done a tank-to-tank MPG check? Should be getting 40+ even with urban work.

Yes tank to tank is always around 420 to 480 miles max then the light is on.There is smoke but I have just fitted a Synergy 2a and an EGR block off valve to try and help me but these figures still have not changed I get the same MPG as before.
So if the thermostat is stuck and its being overcooled then it would send the ECU in to the enrichment mode.

This could be one of the very cheap and nasty "chips" to boost power, its effectively a 2 pence resistor placed in the ECU to fool the fuel system into believe that the car is cold, thereby over-fuelling it.What do you think you should be getting out of it milage-wise?

I don't know like I said in original post someone said they get 650 to a tank and I've never got near.. so hoping someone with a xtype 2.0d can chime in and tell me what they get and where there temp needle sits when warm. The mileage never got better with or without the diesel tuning box added.What do you think you should be getting out of it milage-wise?
I've got a 2.0D estate and am getting an average of 40.2MPG around town, but that includes a lot of stop start driving as the traffic is blooming awful between Sunbury and Wandsworth. On the motorway the best I've got is just over 46mpg, but I was driving quite carefully. Paramount Performance did a re-map on mine for power soon after I got it, so it's actually producing nearer what the 2.2D does.

Why are you obsessed with tank distance? Depends entirely on duty cycle. Work out the MPG on your own car.

Because its easier for someone to say mine does roughly 600 to a tank than for me to work out how many mine does MPG wise. I don't even know how many L my tank is I just fill up roughly £80 and pay till the light comes on....Man maths FFS

It'll also be even worse this weather! Been there with a Ford Connect which was doing about 20mpg - costly at 400 miles a day 
just change the thermostat anyway. they should not be expensive. i dont know x-type parts, but they should be somewhere between £10-£25?
also, worth changing the coolant, if you dont know when it was last done. how long have you had the car? always worth a full service when you first get a vehicle to make sure everything is tip top. especially if you do big miles, and want maximum mpg

I drive a 2006 2.0D estate and I get about the same as you - it averages out at around 37-38mpg. I've never hit 500 miles to a tank. 80 mile a day commute 50/50 traffic and A-roads.
The Jag indy that services it reckons that's absolutely normal for most of the cars he sees. I've also blanked the EGR (with a hole as mine is euro4) and had the engine terracleaned. It went up briefly after the terraclean but then dropped back to normal.
Just decided to live with it now. If your mate is getting 600+ he must be driving REALLY slowly.
