Hi all

Just a heads up for anyone with an S Type R and 6 speed ZF.

Mine started "chunkin" gear changes and then the transmission fault warning came up.

So off it went to Auto Box specilist who have found two leaks.
One from the sump/filter (normal place?)

But the main leak was from the metal pipe to/from the cooler.
He said the undertray has been rubbing it and worn through it.
Simple repair, cut out bit of pipe and fit hose with clips.

However, it has lots of shiny tiny metal flakes in the oil.
I intend to keep it for a while, therefore a full rebuild is underway.

So just a warning and perhaps something to get checked if you have one?
Mine is an early R 2002 65,000 miles.

J,

I don't have an STR but a 4.2 V8 SE.

During a scheduled service at a JMD a week before Christmas it was reported that the car had two leaks both from the auto box. One leak was from splits in the pipes between the box and the cooler, the other was from the multi-plug, whatever that is. I was advised to get these attended to asap which I did. I also had a chat with the service people because as its been 50,000 miles or so since the last time the gearbox was out, I thought it would be a good plan to change the auto box oil at the same time, as usually recommended on PH by the Jaguar fans, which was agreed. Total cost was around £800 all up, gulp! Anyway, the car is working fine and I have the comfort of not having to think about gearbox oil for another 50,000 miles or so.

R.

They all seem to leak there, let the sealant dry off before fitting I have read somewhere.

You can get them from a lot of parts suppliers, even on ebay.

Filing seems to need to be done with software plugged in.
I suspect to make sure transmission oil temp is at correct reading while filling.

ETA - Don't forget to check those cooler pipes as well!!
