1999 XJR key fob not working
Discussion
Sounds like your transmitter has lost its programme.
Take it apart and prize out the pcb. Turn the pcb over and clean both the contact pads on the pcb and the backs of the buttons with switch cleaner, meths or nail varnish remover.
Make sure the batteries are good and in the right way round then put the transmitter back together. Sit in the car with all the tramsmitters and do this.
Hold the headlight flasher back.
Turn ignition key to position 1.
Flash headlights 4 times.
The alarm should now be in programme mode. It should beep and the led on the J gate should be flashing.
Programme each transmitter by pressing either the lock or unlock button. Tha alarm must beep each time you do this to confirm it's read the signal from the transmitter. If not there's no point in proceeding further and either your transmitter is FUBAR'd or the security system is not working as it should.
To complete the programme cycle the alarm should beep a total of five times, so if you have one transmitter you have to press either button five times, with two press either button on one twice and the other three times and so on.
That should get you sorted.

Andy,
I have an S-Type 4.2 V8 and a couple of years back I had the same problem: one key fob was OK and the other wasn't. I went to the local JMD for advice. All that was necessary was to start with the working fob and get it operating a couple of times and then use both fobs together and after a few times they and the car got communicating with each other: job done. Never had a recurrence. It may work for you.

Is it the same procedure for the 2004 X350 model? I have one key fob which has stopped working, even with new batteries.
Possibily... I don't know for sure. If some of the functions still work but not all then chances are the transmitter needs a clean, usually it's the lock/unlock buttons that fail first as they typically get used more than the headlight and boot release. If you do a strip/clean/build quickly without pressing any buttons whilst the batteries are out there is chance you'll keep the existing programme on an X308 transmitter but again I don't know about the X350.
If nothing works on one but the other one is fine then chances are the faulty one has lost programme. Really flat batteries will sometimes allow this to happen.

mine only locks occasionally on the remote, when it has locked on the remote it ALWAYS is able to unlock on the remote. But sometimes the remote wont work anything, strange but true
Erratic behaviour is a classic symptom of dirty contacts. Pull the transmitter to bits and clean the pcb and button backs and see if that gives any improvement. i will try that Steve, i have seen your previous advice. im embarrased to admit that im not very good at anything thats fiddly. i would probably take too long and have to reset it. knowing my luck i would end up being able to open and start my neighbours car instead of mine. i suppose i could try it with the spare
