As above really. Planning on looking at a couple of X Type estates - between 5-6 years old - between 70 -90K miles.

What to watch out for? Model specific stuff really - what commonly needs replacing at this age / mileage?

I know they are chain cam engines - so that's one good thing but heard fuel pumps can be dodgy.

All advice gratefully received!

This model is on my shortlist as a replacement for my C32 estate, which is proving too expensive for everyday use.
Thought I'd ask this self same question but judging by the response to your thread this isn't the place to ask it....

I've had my 05 2.0D for about 3 years now and only now has the fuel pump started playing up at 108,000 miles. There is a small accessory belt that needs changing at the 100,000 service. Oh! and the rear screen seal has a known problem allowing water to get in and fill the spare wheel well with water, which can also take out the rear parking sensor module, (ask me how I know this). Other than that it's been very reliable and comfortable drive.

Nice to get some feedback. To be honest I looked on some other forums both Ford and Jag and found some useful data. Seems they are about average for reliability - things I picked up (and thanks to Shar - previous contributor):

1/ DMF - can give up early - like many diesels these days. Apparently when they go they can lunch the starter motor as well so the bill can be 'significant'....
2/ Rear bushes go (funny I remember Dad's old MK3 Cortina having that problem) - used to be a new subframe and £££££ but apparently now bushes only can be replaced.
3/ Depending upon who you believe, some say the injectors can go early (ie pre 100K miles) yet others say they last well beyond....

Check out honest johns website - car by car reiview http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/ - which is pretty comprehensive on what goes wrong (also check Mondeo for same engine etc). Although his list of possible faults for most cars is so long you'd convince yourself to never buy anything. I'm planning to start my search for a 5-6 yr old X Type (like the idea of the 2.2 six speed) in the next few weeks so hopefully above helps some others.....

They smoke. Lots.

It's a 'they all do that sir' kind of thing.

Varies from car to car of course but they all seem to be quite old school diesel in that respect.

Fairly tough though.

Mine is one that doesn't smoke very much at all. Except when the intercooler hose split, then it made a very effective smokescreen. biggrin

Good all round car doesn't suffer with the rear subframe as that is only the mondeo
The electronic module on the turbo can fail if the cars not revved on a regular basis & the crank pulley rubber can fail causing noise from the aux belt area & is fairly expensive to sort

For bodywork, even on a 5-6yr old example have a good poke up under the sill covers. If the drain holes have been allowed to clog these can turn into lace. Not a massive repair but a bargaining point.

I presume the OP has bought one or decided against by now, but for the benefit of anyone else:

I ran a 2.0d X-Type Sport 2005 for a year and put 20k on it, only thing I needed was brake pads and a new turbo hose (I split mine). I don't quite remember what the hose cost, but it wasn't enough to remember!

Only thing I would add, is if I got one again I'd probably opt for the 2.2D, as I found I had to hit the hammer a lot to get any kind of performance (I appreciate they aren't race cars) and got poor MPG for a diesel. Similar to people I knew who owned the 3.0 petrol in fact. Although if you drive it like my nan might it does return around 40mpg.

Just my two pennies worth anyway smile

HI and thanks for the reply. After all that - I'm still looking, although been otherwise engaged with work recently. Having now driven a 2.2 I would agree about performance - I know it's all about perception etc but the 2.2 didn't feel exactly quick and certainly not like it had 150bhp and lots of torque. Maybe all about how the power is delivered. Gearbox was also a bit obstructive and truck like. Currently got a 1.9TDI PD Octavia with 130bhp and six speed and must admit it held it's head up (performance wise - not comfort or luxury) against the Jag.
Still like the idea of an X Type so still looking for a decent one - as well as some other makes / models - but and X Type would prob need to be a 2.2 now.
