Just trolling through the classifieds here on PH..I noticed a couple of DB7 Volantes under 25K, For the last couple of years I have been set on the XKR 4.2s convertible (2005) as my next, and probably last (at my age..!) means of propelling myself through the quiet, green backroads here in Brittany. But an Aston..? Well it's got me thinking...both based on the old XJS, which I owned and loved, and was much under rated.........what's a guy supposed to do...?????

I don't think the DB9 convertible can be had for that sort of price. A DB7 V12 would be great on the roads of Brittany, but then again so would a 4.2 XKR!

I don't remember even mentioning the DB9...I want comparisons and thoughts on the DB7 versus XKR 4.2s (x100) convertibles

DB7 will still be double the price of an XKR and will probably cost double to run. Whilst the DB7 is very much XJS based , virtually none of the XK is XJS it was a complete new car. A late XKR will out perform the DB7 but it will never be an Aston and will due to numbers never appreciate in value like one.

I think Jaguar World magazine did a comparison between the DB7 and XKR and felt that the XK represented much better value for money, but they liked the DB. I don't have a copy of the magazine unfortunately.

DB7 is ancient, awful interior. The GT is the only one that looks the biz-niz. IMHO, the Jag is bullet proof, the DB not so.

Get at 4.2S XKR.....

The XK8/R (x100) was most definitely based on the floorpan of the XJS, as was the DB7, I AM in agreement that the final batch of XK8/R (x100) IN 2005, were very highly specced cars...and, at the moment it is that vehicle that I really like......HOWEVER the XK (x150 aluminium bodied,2005 on) is also looking a good buy with prices around 20K..........SO, another spanner in the works......DB7 VERSUS XK8/R 2005... VERSUS XK 2005 on.......happy days

I've driven the Aston, owned the X100 XKR and now own the X150 XKR. If you can stretch to it, go for the X150 aluminium model, much much better car and rock solid for reliability.........
The Aston was good, made a nice noise and was quick, but old fashioned.
The X100 was a great car but a harsher ride than the X150.
Looks? The X100 has it wink

Thanks Carbon XKR....That's the sort of info I'm looking for, and I agree that the XKR (X100) 2005 IS the looker

For what it's worth, I don't think that you will find an X100 XKR 4.2-S without satnav, ergo, you won't get one with three dials. I have never seen one, I think they basically had the options list thrown at them. I have a S-LE brochure somewhere, and will check it to see if the satnav was standard, but my feeling is it was. Don't get hung up on it though, it's still a great car.

Yes I agree with "cardigankid" probably won't find one without satnav...but I'v just found "TheJagWrangler"..who provide kits and bits for conversion to 3 dials....if I do get one with the non updateable satnav...........it can now be converted to the 3 dials..!!!! happy days.!!

XK150s are indeed far superior, but 1950s motoring offers a very different experience.

X150 XKs are a different animal.

Yes, the XK150 is a beautiful car and very expensive, the car we are talking about is the XK8/XKR (Jaguar build code x100) and the XK/XKR (Jaguar build code x150...aluminium body from 2005)..I presently satisfy my classic car needs with a Triumph Spitfire 1500, but with each passing year I find it more difficult to get in and out..!!!.which is why I'm looking at the XK8/R, My maneuverability in and out of the Jag is not as embarrassing....!!

Sorry, I couldn't resist, the miss identification of X150, XKs, as XK150s causes no end of confusion.

The problem getting in an out has long been the problem with Jaguars. My Uncle finally had to replace his VDP DoubleSix when his knees would no longer allow him to exit without seeking assistance. The old quip about Jaguars being "old man's cars" has never been the case for the simple reason that old men were never able to get in and out. When age precluded the niceties of motoring life then owners were forced into those geriatric carriages made by BMW and their ilk.

Both the X100 and X150 XKs are great cars. I've not driven a DB7 but they look nice. The X100 is a much newer car, the X150 from an entirely different age again. If my X300 ever needs to be replaced then it will most likely be with either an X100 or X150 drop head. But my XK150 is different kind of toy.

I have a 2004 4.2 XKR convertible without sat nav but with Recaro's etc so S spec. I have had it 2 years and added 20k miles with no problems. Always serviced at Creamers who are surprisingly reasonably priced for a central London dealer. Thoroughly recommend one..

I considered a DB7 a year or so ago and spoke to my independent Jag mechanic about it. His view was that he could look after the 6 cylinder cars relatively economically but that the V12 would be significantly more expensive. As much as I love Jags an Aston is an Aston, and I also liked the possibility that the values of the DB7s had hit the point at which values would start to rise. Despite reading that in the classic car press I don't actually believe it!

With the price of DB9s falling I would be concerned that the DB7s will suddenly suffer another spurt of depreciation so I'm going to wait for a DB9 now, or indeed redundancy!
