As the title really, I'm looking at a 2001 X308 and just want to know what to look out for on the test drive and when looking over it. I've had a quick glance at the honestjohn review and fairly sure it won't have suffered from the bore liner issues (although, is it worth checking the chassis number with Jaguar for a build date?).

Normally when I view a car I get that pink fog of lust which stops me looking properly and objectively, so want to go armed with some logic.

Also, prepare me for running costs: I'm expect low- to mid-twenties on fuel, is that about right? What sort of costs on other things would I be looking at in a year, assuming about 4-6000 miles?

Thanks in advance.

I purchased a '99 XJR a year ago to use whire do mods on the XKR

No Bore problems, chain guides had been changed only item needed other than the 10,000 mile service was front brake pads and I changed the rear suspention mounts, not desperate but I like my cars to be 100%

Anyway, I'm about to sell on now if interested but I'm down south

Thanks for the info, that's reassuring. Aye, it's probably a bit far for me to travel.

Any links to the car you are viewing? Could try and spot out any obvious issues.

The main thing is probably the timing chain tensioners. I picked up my 1993 X308 XJR without looking at it properly, a noise on startup and idling was misdiagnosed as the upper tensioners. Some rather helpful posts on here by Jaguar steve resulted in me being able to remove the cam covers and confirm that I had the later tensioners.

Jaguar steve's post here pretty much covers everything you need to look out for when viewing an X308.

Have you thought about getting an XJR given your low annual mileage? I seem to average around 8-10k in a year and whilst I have only owned my XJR for just over a month it doesn't seem too bad on fuel. Averaging around 17mpg over 700 or so miles.

Thanks for that, that's an excellent post. The car I'm looking at is this one http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

Why not an XJR? Partly availability - there aren't many XJRs advertised that I can see, this one is fairly local to me; partly I'm not too concerned about the extra power for this car, I just want it for relaxed and comfortable driving - I've got an Impreza for foot-down antics.

Let us know how you get on. I was thinking of that car myself, but have been side tracked by XJRs (no luck as yet)! Plus I wasn't too keen on the mascot, but looks clean from the photos.

That one does look good and the 4.0 is pretty rare too.

You could always take the view the bonnet mascot is a indication that the car has been owned by a Jaguar enthusiast who was proud of it and will have taken great care of it...

It certainly does seem in good condition, fingers crossed I can keep it that way and there's no impending massive bills, because I've bought it - no going back now! Deposit down, hopefully in a position to pick it up next weekend.

Congratulations. The JEC northern meet is at Newby Hall on Sunday 23rd of June. Could be a good event to have a look around at other XJ's if you fancy it.
