I am interested in upgrading my factory fitted satnav: after all, it's coming up to 10 years old. Today I've had an e-mail from my local JMD offering, among several things, a satnav upgrade for £169. I am tempted. However, has anyone else done this and has it been successful? How much of an upgrade is it? If it's just roads then I probably will not take it. My son has a Range Rover and we went to Le Mans in it two weeks ago. The satnav is far better than in my S-Type and it will be good to get something as good as he has in his car!.

Hmm, reckon that'll just be for an updated disk rather than any hardware upgrades. What do you find is missing from the S-type nav compared to the RR? I found the S-type nav pretty good in getting me to where I wanted to go (TMC enabled etc). It only looks graphically dated to newer systems IMHO.

Yes, but as you say there is nothing wrong with the hardware, but at least roads and POI's will be updated for a small price

IMPORTANT!
When you put the new DVD disc in DO NOT switch try starting the car or switching ignition off
You will corrupt the loading and aggro will ensue.

The JMD price includes installation so I assume they will know what they are doing.

My son's RR satnav looks very different to mine (which is 10 years old) and has a host of features that mine doesn't. I think the RR secreen has different dimensions too. I would have thought the potential upgrade would mean I'd get something similar to what's in the RR, it being all part of JLR Group, although the screen size could prohibit the upgrade.

Bought my 2012 disk on e-bay for substantially less. Works a treat. The latest version does not have the 3D option any more but the maps are OK. Think is must be quite rare that a 10 year old car fitted Sat Nav is actually updatable smile

£169 sounds about the right price for the map update DVD if you buy it from Jaguar (although I thought it was closer to £200). There are a number of online sites who do the map disk for £40 or less, no idea if they are dodgy copies, you can even get them on Amazon.

The Satnav in the S is the same as my XJ - its rubbish. I recently has use of a brand new XJ. Satnav in that is also rubbish. Save your money buy a TomTom with Live HD traffic.

Just found out that the cost of £169 does not include any labour/installation charges, and it does not apply to an S-Type anyway, just XFs and XJs. So I won't be upgrading at the moment then.

Agree with the post on the Tom Tom. Doesn't look pretty, but I'm a convert. Never liked them til Garmin went silly with prices. The button on my Garmin broke, so bought a TT with live traffic, it had google search too (annual subscription), but worth it's weight in gold, til some some scroat nicked it! Cost about £160. Don't know how dealers and manufacturers get away with not supporting this technology.
