Discussion
I decided to replace my transmission fluid and came across some good articles on-line and a YouTube video. Being cautious, I opened the fill point first and then started the engine. the fluid squirted out under pressure. All the on-line advice and the video said the fluid would drip or trickle out. I topped up the fluid and had another go, several times. On each occasion the fluid squirted out under pressure. Do you have an answer? I want to replace all the fluid and the filter but I am reluctant to do so if I can't refill the gearbox in accordance with the instructions. I was doing this alongside a mechanic who has done it many times on ZF gearboxes but never on one on a Jaguar.
If you're talking about the ZF 5 speed box then you're not following the correct procedure.
The correct fliud level is indicated with a trickle or few drips of oil from the filler/weir hole with the engine running and gearbox primed by cycling through D and R whilst the transmission temperature is below 30-40 degrees.
If you remove the filler plug without the engine running you'll loose at least a couple of litres of oil as the filler hole is below the correct fluid level when the engine is not running.
Crack off the filler plug
Crack off all the sump bolts
Drain the oil
Remove sump pan, clean out pan, magnets and fit new filter, filter O ring and sump gasket.
Copperslip all the sump bolts and refit.
Initial fill (about 4 litres) to filler plug level.
Start engine and cycle slowly through D and R.
Continue filling with oil (about 2-3 litres)
Level is correct when oil just trickles or drips out of filler hole with engine still running.
Refit filler plug with engine still running.
Check for leaks.
Recheck final fill level when completely cold.
Essential to use the correct Esso/Mobil tranmsmission oil, work spotlessly clean and make sure the car is level. Final fill is a two man job and needs a pump to get the oil in quickly before transmission temperature rises above the max temperature. You have just a few minutes to do this last fill.
