I've been looking at XJR (X308) in the classifieds. Which are the most trusted dealers that it'd be worth paying a premium to, if they had the right car?

To be honest dealers don't seem to be interested in XJR's

Best to go private

Racing Green Cars (in Hampshire) were always good to me. They know the X308 inside out. I know this because they had to virtually rebuild one of mine smile

You're obviously a very wealthy chap then!

I can't imagine how much a full and proper rebuild of an X308 (of any flavour) would cost.

You will know their prices then, something like £18,000 for an X308 then

I've never seen any older Jaguars for sale on specialist dealers premisis that I think are worth anywhere near the prices asked. Mostly they seem rather shabby stone rashed examples thet are either underwritten main dealer part exchanges or some tatty car that's gone through the auctions - proprably more than once.

IMO your best bet is to look for a private sale. Be wary of Autotrader as I belive there's too many dealers pretending to be private sellers on there. You only need to read the Traderspeak in some the private adverts, read the same semi literate or downright ignorance relating to the car for sale or see the same industrial estate in the background on several adverts to get suspicious.

Look in the Jaguar World magazine, Carsandclassic, Classiccars for sale Jagads or the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club website. What you're looking for is a long term well cared for, enthusiast owned car maybe from a bereavement sale or somebody who just fancies a change. It might take a long time and lots of wasted journies to find but that's the type of car worth buying - and spending time ande money on looking after as a keeper.

Yeah, I am more or less resigned to search lomg-term for a decent private seller. It just seems strange that there's not at least half a dozen reliable trusted jag indies.

Racing Green/Robert Hughes are just SO very expensive.

That's because they sell the very best and quite few people are happy to pay whatever it costs to get it. You can however source a car almost as good if you're prepared to wait and do the legwork.

Yes, agree.
