XKR Engine Rebuild Costs
Discussion
My engine has finally got to the stage where I need an engine rebuild (or replace), diagnosed as little end shell bearing causing the rattle.
After deliberation (and saving), I've taken it up to TL Jaguar in Reading, a long journey that I hope I won't regret.
I'd like to know typical expected costs for a rebuild and what should be replaced. (2005MY 4.2 XKR)
I had been quoted a price over the phone but when I turned up, this quickly escalated with other costs that he didn't include, it's rather taken the shine off dealing with the garage when that happens, and to be honest, I was close to hitching it back on the trailer and driving off I was so annoyed about it.
I don't know whether it's a genuine mistake on his part or whether he's trying to rip me off, but all I know is the cost is suddenly 50% more than originally agreed verbally, and I'd already spend hundreds getting it there and a day travelling, so I felt kinda trapped.
It's been left that he'll strip the top off to see the damage and report back to me with exact quote before I decide what to do. Currently I don't have any other options though apart from main dealer.
Happy to receive PM's as well as replies.

TL Jaguar are as Honest as the day is long
From experiance trying to price over the phone is like asking how long is a bit of string
I'm sure that they found other items that required attention while the engine was out
I'm sure you will be happy with their workmanship when you get the car back

I certainly hope so, I'm going largely on your recommendation NormanD, you do a fine job of marketing for them!
Engine not out yet, still at the guesswork stage and it's already gone up.
Tom said the price he quoted to me on the phone didn't include taking the engine out and putting it back in or any fluids/consumables, which came as a shock because I made sure we were talking about the "total cost" and it was on par with other specialist quotes.
I'll reserve judgement until I hear from him. Maybe he had too much sun on holiday and added the VAT on twice by mistake.

Used TL in the past and they did the tensioners and gearbox flush and re-fill on me '98 X308. Tom told me straight off how much and that's what I paid. Seemed to be a decent price in comparison to others on the forum who seemed to pay more for less. I trust him.
However, went to another indie in Somerset (previous to TL) and had the complete opposite experience (wanted the tensioners doing, ended up with new bumper brackets, tyre and some welding done - apparently the second gen tensioners were in "great nick" and so weren't done, neither was the gearbox flush and refilled "leave it alone if its not broke"). The deal between you and the mechanic isn't just about the cost, it's also about trust. Sounds like you've lost that with him. Think he's a great bloke, but if it was me it'd be on the back of the trailer by now (not cos its Tom, but because of the trust thing).

Swallows.would you go back?
No.
Had to chase a cpl of times to get the car back. Nice people and friendly, but.... There's a company in South Gloucestershire (Nth Bristol, really) who have had some good shouts on here before. Can't remember their name though. Could spend your life going from place to place. I like Tom cos he's straight and to the point.
