Posted this in General Gassing but didn't get a response. Figured it might be better placed here ...

So, a few changes in my life (namely; turning 40, moving house, and changing job, which means no longer commuting by car) has led my wandering fingers toward the open arms of the Jaguar Authorised used car website listings.

Have been a long admirer of the XK, think it looks peachy, so am aiming to get behind the wheel of one in the new year.

My budget suits the 5.0l Portfolio Coupé, with suitable examples between 2 and 3 years old, with between 10k and 30k miles on the clock.

From what I can gather, there are 3 generations of this latest incarnation of the XK?

1st gen 4.2l
2nd gen 5.0l with some largely cosmetic updates
3rd gen 5.0l with more largely cosmetic updates

So I would be looking at 2nd gen, and prices based on the above criteria seem to be upwards of 28k to about 40k.

I am entirely new to Jaguar, my history is primarily in BMW straight-six petrols (currently 135i Coupé), so would be interested in any veteran comments or advice.

I would expect the XK to be waftier and softer, quieter and more luxuriant than the BMWs I'm used to. This would also be my first ownership experience of auto - I'm usually a manual stick fan.

Reliability is probably my main concern here - I hear mixed things from the press on these latest generations of Jaguar. Would a good example likely prove trouble-free? Will only be considering XKs from Jaguar dealers under their authorised used car scheme.

I have no idea of running costs or servicing costs - are these comparable to German brand cars?

Any comments here welcomed.

Cheers

ETA: Car will be used for weekend trips for meself and the lady, bit of shopping, that sort of thing. Very low annual mileage. Live in London.

Depending on the financing situation, then with a budget of £40K, I'd be looking at a new one. I just checked on Drive-the-Deal, and a new 5.0 Coupe PF (OK with no options) is £49K. Add to that the cheap Jag finance, you'll be driving a new one.

Look harder and buy XKR and really enjoy yourself-nothing like the supercharged 5litre engine

The later XKs are not to my liking at all; full of bling. I like your choice 2). I believe that a normally aspirated 5.0 Portfolio is as fast as the XKR 4.2.

If discounts of the order reported are available then this will filter down to second hand values. You are buying one at a good time.

Compared with a BMW 5 series, running costs are similar but if you don't keep an eye on tyre pressures and tracking you can quickly wear them down. The interior is so much better than the anti-septic BMW and Audi. Reliability is on a par. Road tax is a bit of a fright, insurance (with direct line) a pleasant surprise.

They aren't 2+2. We get 2 grandchildren (6 & 4)in the back but in a year or two, unlikely. I prefer the coupe. We travel a lot on the M6 and just don't like being asphyxiated by others exhaust in the inevitable jams.

These aren't sports cars; they're a superbly good GT.

I have had a 2012 XK 5.0 coupe from new for over a year. It has been completely trouble free.

The handling is very good, and personally I like the steering and controls. It is very easy to drive for long distances. The seats are superb. The paddles are great. I love the car.

My son is 8 and fits in the back perfectly fine. I was speaking to a Jaguar executive and he told me his 2 sons (1 is ~13, one slightly younger) rode in the back from Coventry to Scotland and back, no problem for a long weekend.

My recommendation would be to test drive one and if you like it take your family along and see if they fit.

Your budget will easily get you into a 5.0 XKR coupe.

I've got a BMW M135i at present and I've previously owned a 6 series BMW.

The BMW's are competent, boring transport with suspension not really suited to British roads.

The Jag is an event every time you drive it. Fantastic cars and beautiful to look at. I never look back at my BMW !

I don't keep my cars long enough to comment on servicing costs but I doubt they would be any higher than BMW dealers.

Depreciation will still be fairly steep but I think you should be able to offset that by really haggling hard at purchase point. As a previous poster has said there are some massive discounts available.

Good luck.

Chaps, thanks for your responses.

Largely the sort of stuff I was hoping to hear - a comfy grand touring cruiser which is not too expensive to keep and is reliable enough, eats up miles, sounds and looks great, and has a fabulous V8 lump up front.

I'd prefer to keep the outlay closer to the 30k mark than the 40k. So an XKR, though tempting, is a bit OTT for what I'm looking for. My road pace is rather more sedentary these days. Though I'm certain that V8 supercharged howl would delight every time.

Would the rear seats suitably fit an average-sized adult for short trips? So long as they could sit without spread-eagling knees around the seat in front, that would be ok.

The rear seats are no use for adults at all. I have put my mrs in the back seats on one very brief occasion and she had to sit diagonally across the two seats as there is zero leg room. FYI she is very petit and 5'2" tall.
Make sure you buy from a Jag dealer - the warranty is fantastic and I've just avoided a 3k bill on my XKR 5.0 thanks to it.

Don't seem to be many outside the main dealer network. I looked a couple of weeks back and the only one I saw on AutoTrader not from a main dealer had done 124K miles. But then maybe I'm just crap at looking biggrin

Definitely go for the "2nd gen" as the difference in kit, quality of materials, engine, suspension, face lift etc etc makes it far and away better than the 4.2.

The "3rd gen" was late 2011 and really just incorporated the new headlamps and revised front bumper as first seen on the then new XKR-S. would struggle to get one for your budget too.

I tend to try and carry a good spread of used XK's so please feel free to drop me a line or come down so that I could show / talk you through the details if you wish?

Either way, good look with your search, they are great cars and always sell well.

Timbola, I researched the same issues as yourself back in 2012, and, having tried the 4.2 and then the 5.0 Litre XK's , plus the coupe/convertible and XK and XKR choice, I bought a 15 month old ex-Jaguar management car, a 5.0 Litre XK Coupe Portfolio from a main dealer.

+13K miles on it since, 1 major service, about to buy 4 new tyres (gulp) no issues to report.

My first ever Jaguar after 20+ years of strictly German...

I wrote an article about the purchase and subsequent ownership experience for the XKEC club magazine. Since it was written for them I don't think I should simply paste it in here, but if you e-mail me off forum I will send it to you.

Well worth joining the XK Enthusiasts Club, btw. Fount of much knowledge and a nice bunch of folks.

hAurl]|http://thumbsnap.com/7DwGNk8I[/url] Have had mine since May bought from a Main Dealer. Had an electronic fault which Dealer sorted and corrosion found on passenger door bottom also rectified under warranty. Went on Jag club trip to Belgium and car passed all expectations recording good motorway economy (34mpg) 385 bhp is enough for me!

Gorgeous car. I keep looking at XK's as my next daily driver but will need to wait a little longer until they fall into my price range (around £20k). The 380bhp 5.0 is more than enough for the public road.

Very nice!

The "5.0" designation on the rear isn't usual is it? Was that added by a previous owner?
