So.

I've got a 97 x300 XJ Executive 3.2.
It's a bit long in the tooth but seem's fine until today.

And now it won't start.

It feels like a no fuel issue as when I hopped in it started straight up then died, almost like it used the pressure in the fuel system and then ran out. Now not even a flicker of a fire.

So I Googled away. They talk of blue relays in the boot and some fuses. Oddly all my relays are brown... (well most that arn't black anyway).
So I assumed that they were to blame so whipped them out and put 12V over them. No obvious problems there... damn.

It's registering 200rpm on the tacho when cranking but no fire... Is there a simple way to test the fuel pump? the hand book doesn't tell you which relay is the fuel pump only that it's blue and in the boot...where there are no blue relays in my car...

If someone could point me in the direction of a haynes manual (that I can't find on ebay or otherwise) or a way to test the fuel pump without removing it from the tank (a diagram of the relays in the boot and which one is which would be a good start)

That would be great...

Does the fuel pump buzz when you turn-on the ignition?

I guess if it started and then died and wouldn't start again, it could have flooded itself. Quite common on these when it's cold and I've managed it twice on mine. If you put your foot flat on the accelerator and crank in 30sec bursts, it should clear the flooding (if that's the problem).

If not, I've got the workshop manual and could scan the pages you're after.

Now those are useful.

I'm going to brandish my test lamp in it's general direction tomorrow.

I can't hear anything specific from the rear of the car. There's a number of whirring noises from the dash/ac area (flaps opening if I remember correctly) and a click from the boot which I assume is the pump relay.

I've got a late model XJ40 which is pretty much the same as a X300 under the skin, in my case the fuel pump relay is clipped onto the OSR light cluster behind the boot trim. I had much the same fault & the relay was almost falling out, pushed it back in & it's been fine ever since.

I've not looked behind the trim on the o/s cluster... I'll take a look...

It should be clipped to something near the light IIRC, mine was laying on the floor hence the relay starting to fall out.
