It seems I have a leak from a pipe under the supercharger. It also seems to be regarded as a bit of a flaw. It is a 1998 XJR. The thing is, I was wondering if I could give it a go myself or would it be best to seek the help of an expert. The repair to the pipe is not a problem. The problem is getting to the damn thing. Or has anyone heard of a work around or re-route?

I believe it's nicknamed the 'valley hose' and is a fairly straightforward, but extremely time-consuming repair. I've heard whispers of a £1500 main dealer bill...

I may be way off the mark, but is there no way you could get a hose made up and run it around the charger and just leave the old one in situ but disconnected ??

Never having been under the charger, but having looked at the hoses on-line i thought it may be an option, and yes i have an STR that hasnt had the hose changed hence the interest wink

£1500 main dealer is mad. Mad I tell you.

The option of swinging another one into its place like a bypass is very appealing, but is it feasible? Has it been done?

Hopefully someone will be along with good news wink

I suppose it depends if you need to remove the charger to get to the pipe connectors in order to remove the hose ?!

I had this one my S Type R. Find a good indie with low labour rates. It's a bd of a job to get to and takes several hours. Cost me around 800 quid but I also had rear bushes and heater valve changed at the same time so you could get in done for around 500.

It depends which hose it is, you have a feed and return, one will go to the main water pipe the thermostat is on, you can get to this and see it, it then finishes by the throttle body on the right hand side, the other joins to the block and goes to the left side, if it is the latter you have no chance in hell bypassing it and the supercharger has to come out

It's a £10 pipe but a £400 job

This happened to my STR - It is a cheap part to source but takes a lot of labour.

Its a V8 the pipes go along the valley, Jaguar sat a supercharger on top so it won't cost peanuts. You can change them without supercharger removal, you should change them all , no point going through the hassle more than once wink Had mine changed on my drive about 4 years ago for £200 by a moonlighting Jaguar mechanic, took him about 2 hours.

I'd like to be wrong on this but I very much doubt we are going to find out how it was done.

The pipe connected to the block is directly underneath the supercharger in the valley, there is no way unless you are Mister Fantastic (one of the four!) can you get to it

I've had a really good look and I can see no way I can get round it without removing the charger. Have you got the guys number or email so we may ask him?

It was four years ago , no e-mail and the mobile no longer works. Charge coolers and most of the other bits all removed but he did not actually remove the charger. If I knew how I would be able to do my own mechanics !!

So it's safe to say, it can't be done. Apart from this one unverifiable case with an untraceable mechanic, I think it would be safer to rely on the accumulated wisdom on the internet over the last decade that says it's impossible. Budget £500-£1000 depending on who you take it to.

I would think £500 should cover it, must me only a days work at the most

Looking at it, remove the throttle, the thermostate housing between the two banks
Then remove the supercharger, the charge coolers can stay in place

Replace the pair of hoses also the large one on top of the block, just in case

Replace supercharger, throttle and thermostate housing
