Ok before the backlash I've just sold the Fordson 7 so I'm not having a go. But as a lifelong Jaguar lover and owner as much as I loved and would love another XJR reality bites and I doubt the upkeep is now achievable.

So been looking at X-Type V6 Sports, manual and mostly black.

it appears the 3.0 is a thirsty beast and earlier ones now at 150k are 'on borrowed time'?

similar story with the 2.5s? or are they more robust?

what's the difference in power and fuel?

The estate (Touring...grr!) version looks like a nice bit of kit too, nice lines for a commercial. Do all cars come with 4WD or just the estates?

Now S Types, again black and sport versions (polishing chrome and preening whiskers up 'ere in Norf Devon is bloody cold, and after a run across top o'moors A quick hose down and a leather off is about all it's going to get this time of year) so at least a 'Sport' (god forbid) will look the part splattered with mud and ste.

manual and auto, much difference in performance and fuel? and how do the auto's handle when out for a 'spirited' lap on the twisties?

And finally, is the upkeep much less than say an x308 sport/exec basically non blown weeping

Thanks fellas

Cooky, I have a V6 2.5 sport 2006, fsh 89,000 miles black, full cream sport leather factory option, owned from new. The petrol 3.0 and 2.5 and 2.1 are the same Ford duratech engine (heavily modified by Jaguar), just bored out differently. All petrols both saloon and petrol excluding the 2.1 are AWD. All diesels are FWD.The major concern of X types if you go for the AWD is the transfer box. Check if it's been replaced at some point they do go, if not check it's not leaking.
Spark plugs are replaced at 70k, back 3 take time check they have been done. They also have a tendancy for the shaft to whine at certain speeds, this comes and goes. Like bushes, trailing arms, front tyres(wear inner edge long before outer edge, any make). Tyres I have bridgstone Potenza, better than Pirelli.
Mpg,mines a manual and I average 30, this is calculated as I record my mileage and fuel used every petrol station visit. Older cars are reporting rusting sills which is not immediately evident as the visible sill is a plastic cover. The AWD cars are good in the snow with the correct tyres fitted. They do have a tendancy to plough on at corners as the rears push the car forward and the steering fails to pull the car around. The pre 2004 had a viscous coupling device fitted, I had a 2003 car from new until the present 2006 car and the older car was better in the snow the power was more manageable at getting down. The Ford joke is a bit old, especially if you go for an S Type (lincoln platform) it is more Ford content than the X Type. With all groups sharing major parts the VW Group been the ultimate (Audi,Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda, VW), you tell the Bentley owner his engine is in a VW w12, or the lambo Gallardo and Audi r8/r10 owners under the bodywork many parts the same.

lots of great stuff
I'm sure the Ford joke is wearing a bit thin, but there are always the purists out there, never seen so much badge snobbery in all my life as was that with Aston. (granted not all, but mostly 7Vs and V8V hairdressers and tricksters looking down their noses at a Fordson DB with an Inline 6...the cheek wink

anyway back to business, looking forward to pointing the nose of a manual at a few of our local bends and feeling a touch of 'scuttle' shake again as the engine brakes (not breaks) wink...oh yessss! it has been a while since the lead left my TVR foot so looking forward to having a manual...lots.

Are all the diseasels FWD? even the later 2.2's or whatever they are? Only reason I ask is, if i can find a nice looking Black sport either X or S in manual for meself, I may also opt to get a diseasel auto for the GF (she can only drive auto) possibly the estate version.

thanks, and really no offence intended re the Parent Company bks.

interesting re the Bridgestones, are they SO2/3 or something newer? I ran the Cerbera on SO2 PPs, great tyres in the dry, deadly in standing water, as for the later SO3, well I'd rather slap dog-turds on the rims and stand a better chance of surviving in the wet, or dry...they were dreadful. Pirelli have always been softish but granted sticky although not great for milage, does the Jag chew the edges too? anyone tried Toyo's?

I like the X-Types. But the only engine to go for is the 3.0 litre tbh. Sadly most are auto's and finding a manual can be a chore.

As mentioned above, the transfer case was always the weakest link. And latter cars lost the centre LSD and just got an open centre diff. Personally I think this is a huge let down and almost makes a mockery of having an AWD car at all.

S-Types are nice too, although heavier. Manuals only available on the V6's not the V8's. But a manual V6's is hugely more peppy than an auto and somewhere in the range of 2 seconds quicker to 60mph.

I have a 2.2 Sovereign Estate 6-speed manual, 57 plate and 40k on the clock. I've had it two years and I love it as a daily driver and mile muncher. I paid over the odds from a Jaguar main dealer in 2012 but had the comfort of a proper Jaguar history and factory warranty. Having had a couple of diesel Mondeos which were superbly reliable and wanted another but couldn't find one with less than starship mileage. The X Type equivalent usually is privately owned and lower miles. The early depreciation means you get the luxury of a Jaguar with the reliability of a Ford (as top repmobile maker for decades they know about durability). Avoid diesels with DPFs if your mileage is mainly short journeys; the X diesels all have them after 2007. For longer mileage trips the DPF is not a worry.

Something about DPF, (sorry excuse my ignorance?) is not a worry.
We are approx 25 miles from anywhere in the middle of the Exmoor, so don't do 'short' trips, but please what is DPF?

Apologies! frown Diesel particulate filter. Also expect dual mass flywheel to mentioned (DMF). All auto diesel X Types from about 2004 had DPFs but manuals had them only post 2007 except as an option. They can be bad news for town drivers. The 2.2D is very torquey and pulls strongly, 2.0 less so but still go well.

Check for rust on any purchase too - I was in a bodyshop recently and they had an X-Type in for new sills, apparently it's very common for them to rust badly behind the body kit skirts.

well it looks like this little beauty is coming home to Exmoor.

found on fleabay at 1750, after a good 40 minute chat...well we were gassing about motors for most of it, this utterly decent gent accepted £1500. I think we've done ok looking at the current market and crop.

She's a 53 plate on 127k

All Jaguar main Stealer and latter Jaguar Specialist History.

2 owner, of which the current owner gave £13k 6 years ago...ouch!

Anyway she's an S type (200)? Sport 2.5 V6

yes I know it's a bloody auto, but the GF likes it and at that money we have a nice keeper and I can find an Alfa or even a cheap Blade to thrash around the moors. so here she is, what do you think?

nice balance of black and a tiny bit of chrome bling.

looks clean and tidy in here

and here

and one can think of many worse places to sit than here.

it has a few minor issues, but nothing too serious one hopes wink

sellers words
"a) A warning light was coming on, on the dashboard display for about six months before I put the car off the road and it says "parkbrake fault". The parkbrake itself was unaffected so the warning light didn't bother me but I was aware I'd probably have to get it sorted at the next MOT.

b) The driver's door doesn't lock. I had an issue at the previous MOT in 2009 where the driver's door wouldn't open from the inside (except using the remote opening button on the key itself) and to get it through the MOT, the garage did a temporary fix to ensure the door would open. I was supposed to take it back to fully fix this but I never got around to it. You can still lock the car and set the alarm by double clicking the door locking button on the key but you can then still manually open the driver's door. Doing so sets the alarm off right enough! I never had an issue with anybody trying the door but its another thing I intended getting sorted at the next MOT to ensure the car was fully secured.

c) I have to put air in the passenger side front tyre every few days. This had been like this for a few months before the last MOT was due but again, I never got quite around to sorting out whether it was a slow puncture or a valve issue. That's the last of the minor issues that this car has"

Plus there are two spare Indianapolis Alloy wheels and a cover-up plate.

reasonable for a bag and a half methinks.
