help .... got myself a xk8 that s been standing for 7 months, very lazy starter motor, had that repaired, she wont start? turns over ok tho.( but soon looses the speed on turning over after a few cranks) Read the forums on the flooding so had plugs out and squirt of oil, fresh fuel new plugs and new battery, she tries to start sort of, and pops back thru the air box with a squirt of easy start. my question is hear mixed views re where the throttle should be, have held full open and full closed and various mid way, but then loose the battery . she seems so close but wont kick in , even tried fuel pimp fuse in out etc, any other tips > we must be missing some thing, oh and the + lead on the battery soons gets hot so the starter is working hard! have used a fully charged battery and a jump pack with it also !! is it a case of keep trying? car is a nikasil done 70k so may be a comp test next. thanks all... HELP................... LOL

Cant help really but with the throttle down full the ECU will normally cut the fuel when cranking. So if your foot is on the floor it wont start!. It should need no throttle at all to start as that is all handled by the ECU, doing anything with the throttle is most likely hindering not helping so just crank it and leave the throttle alone.Losing speed after a few cranks sounds odd, it should just crank normally unless the battery is flat.
Might be a confused immobiliser / alarm/ECU if its been sat for a long time. Probably worth disconnecting the battery , leaving for 30 secs then reconnecting that should reset everything.
There might be some stored codes that point to the problem but you'll need someone with a decent code reader (not a cheap one) to find out. Maybe check your local small garages see if they can come out and scan it - my local two ramp garage has a snap on reader that can do the Jag.
brand new battery 100ah no codes checked that although had a so called refurb starter still feel she is cranking slow and not enough to get things firing found a new starter on line that will be the next try, every thing seems fine else where think an immob issue would not let it spark or operate the fuel pump will update as things hopefully progress
I had an issue with my XK8 being reluctant to start over christmas. Did most of the above and could usually get it to fire up after a few minutes. When it went to the garage, it turned out to be the rotary switch on the gearbox not quite registering it being in park. If I'd have tried to start it whilst in neutral rather than park, it would have fired up first crack apparently.
£30 odd for a new rotary switch and it's worked fine ever since.

Tried that also. tries to fire in park and neutral latest trick is too dry the plugs oil in pots and leave two plugs out to spin her over faster then when started leave to run till warm , stop and put in the other two plugs, will know sunday !!!£30 odd for a new rotary switch and it's worked fine ever since.
Have you checked that the throttle butterfly is actually opening. They used to be good at sticking shut.
Plugs out, drop of oil down each cylinder, spin engine over. If you have a hot airgun get the plugs nice and hot.
Refit plugs, check you are getting full throttle, that means on the stop on the throttle body. If not you won't be cutting the fuel off. Crank engine with fully charged battery and throttle fully open, as car starts release throttle.
If it is only flooded then this should work. I never not been able to get one going using thus method.
If it doesn't start after that you have other faults.
Let us know how u get on.

design xkr suggested usual method but leaving two plugs out to help with cranking speed..
tried that this morming now turned bit faster almost caught. just tried again with two different plugs left out and >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> it ran !!!! obviously not smooth left it for five mins stopped it and refitted the other plugs started on the button took it for ten mile run, now smoke free and all seems good will do a cold start this evening and will up date, many thanks all ...............
