I stay in Aberdeenshire so looking at this as an option given the car is effectively the daily and I've spent too much on the bodywork of the Clio Trophy to drive it much in the winter.

Has anyone tried a square setup for winter tyres? Is it possible?

Officially all sizes are staggered as far as I can see, even in 18". The winter/all season tyre options for the rears of 275/35/19 (~£300 EACH) and 285/30/20 (unobtainium) are...less than ideal.

The 18" Venus alloys seem fairly common on eBay in the front 8.5J size given the XF has them but I can't see anything for the 9.5J rears. Assuming I can't get two 9.5J's (themselves having hardly any tyre options), is running the 8.5J's all round unwise (if it is possible)? The tyre size of 245/45/18 has plenty of cold weather options in comparison to all other staggered possibilities.

Not an XK, but the winter wheels and tyres we had for our XE were a square set up, the summers being staggered.

Worked absolutely fine on 245/40/18s

Are your brakes big enough for 18s?

I seem to remember being told that the brakes on the 5L X150 XKR need 20" wheels when I looked at winter wheels and tyres for mine.
So I never pursued any further.

18's are good for the standard brakes on the 4.2 XKR. It's the bigger ones with the Alcon calipers that need 19" minimum I believe.

THREAD RESSURECTION!

Did you get anywhere with this? The 380mm front brakes might fit under 18s, I had 390mm discs on a Mercedes that went under 18" wheels, but they'll definitely go under 19s.

My concern is more the width at the back and offset I think.

I did see on mytyres there is a single option for the 285/30 R20 rears and it's a £400 Continental WinterContact TS 870 P

Not really.

There are staggered 18’s for a 4.2 (or rather, seem to be) on eBay but the seller seems reluctant to confirm the exact details on the offsets that are shown on the wheels. There’s also a thread on jaguarforum more or less calling him a dodgy bd which is putting me off.

What is it with ebay sellers who can't answer perfectly reasonable questions? redface

Do they not want to sell the items they're advertising?

Coming back to this...have bought these which should be arriving tomorrow-

Did the deal outside of eBay so got them for £275 including postage, can only assume he's forgotten to take the ad down unless I'm getting the piss ripped out of me! redcard

Staggered 18", 245/45 and 275/40 and there are Hankook Winter i*cept evo3's that come in these sizes for a fair price. Look to be in decent condition from what I can see, certainly a lot better than the other offerings out there from people who couldn't even be arsed to confirm offsets when asked.

Is it a 5.0 XKR you're putting them on? I'd love to know if they go over the brakes.

4.2 so shouldn't be an issue.

My fronts are either 350/355mm off the top of my head.

It'll be very satisfying to drive past people stuck in their toy 4x4s on summer tyres in your RWD supercharged Jagar cool

Yes it'll be nice to have that smug feeling back!

Haven't had winter tyres since I sold my M5 in 2017 but a relocation to the North East of Scotland combined with avoiding taking the Clio Trophy out on winter roads too often means I could do without the worry on a daily driver.

All fitted today, can confirm there are no issues going over the standard brakes on a 4.2 XKR.

Don't half notice how much lighter the steering is, especially at manoeuvring speeds vs. the really low profile tyres on the 20" wheels. I'd always wondered if my car had some slight issue given how initially heavy the steering can occasionally feel, especially when reversing into a bay and having to apply opposite lock. Absolutely none of it on the 18's.

And a softer ride. In fact I ran my XF on 18" winter tyres for some time because the ride was more comfy.
