Hi everyone.
I know this has been covered comprehensively, but is there a safe, or safer engine option/size in the XF range.
I have a budget of around 12k to replace my old Shogun and I really like these, but not if it is going to eat it's own innards first chance it gets. Are the petrol engines a problem also?

Generally speaking, it's the 2L diesel that gives everyone the willies.
My girlfriend has one in her 2016 XF, and that's just ticked through 80k miles - including a 2500 mile European road trip earlier in the summer - without skipping a beat. So it's not as if they are a guaranteed hospital pass - but they definitely have known weak points.
£12k is a healthy budget. You'd either be looking at the very best of the X250s (pre-2015) with reasonable miles and your choice of engines (mainly diesel). Or you'd be looking at an X260 (2016 onwards) with the 'dreaded' 2L diesel engine.
Do you live near to (or regularly drive to) somewhere where they have implemented some sort of low emissions zone? If so, that limits your search. The X250 diesels (so 2015 and earlier) are only Euro 5 compliant - whereas most low emissions zones need diesels to be Euro 6 compliant to enter for free, which only the X260 is. All petrol engines across both generations of XF will be free to enter all current low emissions zones.
I'd say that compared to the very best, all the Jag engines have the potential to throw up a big bill ... but the 2L diesel has a few extra bullets loaded into that particular game of Russian Roulette. What it does mean is that if you are willing to gamble (like my girlfriend has) then you can get an awful lot of car for not a whole heap of cash. It might come and bite her in the bum at some point, but so far it's behaved itself perfectly (a bit over a year and 15k miles). Her 2016 Portfolio (top spec) saloon was £10.5k with 65k miles last spring just as a steer on value.
