Thhe XFR is getting oin a bit and had a few problems when new already.

Would you buy a pre-facelift (to 2012) XFR to se as your daily driver and what would you be looking for to avoid big bills or breakdowns ?

I did, I've got a 2014 facelifted car and they are absolutely brilliant.

Pre-facelift, they had the ZF six speed auto, but if looked after this is a reliable gearbox. Higher mileage and well used cars can rust around the rear subframe and suspension, but this can be easily dealt with if caught in time, the XF is basically an updated and reskinned S-Type.

There are lots of horror stories about issues with the cam chain on the 5.0 V8 engines, Jaguar have addressed this over the various iterations but they make a noise when they get loose, failure will scrap the engine. It is recommended that you don't thrash the car from cold as this can accelerate failure, a full replacement including updated guides is around £4k. I've not had any issues with my car, but I do listen out for any odd noises.

The supercharger coupling gets noisy as the internal coupling fails over time, this is relatively straight forward fix with an aftermarket solid coupling.

Just find one with a good service history that has been cared for by an enthusiast and you should have many miles of absolutely hilarious hooning, they are one of the cheapest ways to get 500 bhp.

One thing to note is that they are definitely not an M5, Audi RS or Mercedes AMG, these are all very German and Teutonic and go fast without too much drama. The XFR is more like an American muscle car, they are loud, can't really get the power down and slide around a lot, which is basically why I love mine.

Good tyres are a bit of a must...

I have been using my 60 plate as a daily for some while now, its been mapped to 625+bhp and 800+nm torque by DMS but is very easy to drive.

The only downside I've had, is that it needed new springs and the originals are no longer available. I managed to get a set of custom bilsteins from Spires Automotive, which are lower but unfortunately a little stiffer. Not as low and stiff as the off the shelf bilsteins, but enough to make it a bit uncomfy on some of the really poor roads that are common these days. That aside its an excellent car.

Be aware tho, mine wasn't cheap and took a fair chunk of money to get up to standard after buying it, because the last owner couldn't afford to maintain it. They might be cheap to buy but lije all proper perfornance cars are pricey to maintain. However, now its really solid and only needs servicing.

Go in with your eyes open and you should be OK.
