New Jag XF supercharged
New engine for S-Type replacement in 2010
The new Jaguar XF, the concept for which was feted at the recent Detroit auto show, is to be powered by two types of supercharged engine.
Jaguar usually reserves the supercharger option for the R designated, top-end variant of a model range -- but not this time.
Instead, in autumn 2007 Jaguar will announce that the S-Type's replacement will house a 420bhp 4.2-litre supercharged engine as standard. However, it won't include the usual high performance appurtenances such as big wheels, low-profile tyres, lowered suspension and the like.
That's to be reserved for a full R-badged variant, to be launched in 2010. The XFR will contain an all-new, supercharged 5-litre V8, according to Autocar. The motor will use direct petrol injection and take only design concepts from the old V8, which first saw the underside of a bonnet in 1996's XK8.
I think the problem with the S-Type was that it lacked a diesel for a long time, and then there was only one. I personally wouldn't be in the market for a diesel, but a lot of people are. This seems to have made it only a niche choice on the company car list, so it never built up a following with the "fashion sheep" buyers.
It will clearly have the 3.2 i6 from the Freelander and S80, and with 240bhp it'll be a belter.
Add in the 2.7 td, and the rumoured 3.0 version of that engine, and you have a proper lineup.
Then you'll have the 420bhp V8 as the range topper, much like the BMW 540i, and then the XF-R at the top with 500bhp, much like the M5...
Doubt it...not after Mr Tommo ran one and had it back and forth to the dealership with lots of niggles.
3.2 I6...hope they put a completely different head on it as in Volvo/Landy format it's hardly a 'sporting' engine. Actually...anyone know what the bore/stroke is on that lump?
Edit: just found it - S80 specs show 3.32in bore x 3.78in stroke, so clearly under-square. But makes peak power at 6200rpm, surprisingly, although peak torque is at 3600rpm (THAT sounds like a massaged torque curve!!!)
Just checked...that's 236lb ft at 3600rpm, but 199lb ft at 6200rpm, which sounds pretty flat. 161bhp at the torque peak of 3600rpm, up to 235bhp at 6200rpm. So you're going to get strong low-rev 'pick-up', but the real acceleration will feel more 'relaxed' as torque is actually tailing-off bit-by-bit. Typical barge power-curve - effective in the real-world but very unexciting.
Hope it all works as I would be disappointed to learn of another Uk matque biting the dust.

Jaguars should have a broad torque curve, but that doesn't make them unexciting. Their engines have always been happy to pootle around just above tick over but have plenty of pickup even from there, rather than feeling like a neutered sloth till you are well up the rev range (which seems to be the current fashion). The S-Type is a "luxo barge" so it needs to be able to be driven like that, it is also supposed to be "sports saloon" so it should be fun. This has been the profile of Jaguars since the introduction of the XK engine in 1948. Try reading the comments of some of the racing drivers comparing racing the XK engine against most of their competive engines, one of it's key points was the comparity huge usable rev range. But no-one every accused the XK of being a boring engine to drive.

I suppose mated to an auto-box it'll be just fine, and I guess it'll suit the character of the car. Can't see it being an engine you ever want to redline though...

Which one? Driven the outgoing S-Type, and there the n/asp feels 'adequate' and torquey rather than racey, while the R is a lovely engine but then that's what a supercharger does for you...the trade off is the whine you get.
Phil - the original X250 was an all-ally design based (loosely?) off the X350 platform. Until that got too expensive and they opted for ally panels on the X200 architecture (how modified I don't know).
I6...that wasn't me bringing that up...although god knows the V6 is an old enough block it could do with updating/replacing. Although I DO recall some weird overheard conversations 18mths ago at Whitley where people talked about a '3.2' then hurriedly covered their tracks. Probably just the Freelander 2 engine (hence why I'm happy to mention it now), but you never know...
Surely it's already been announced because we already know about it!? Please correct me if I'm wrong! What is going on with all this PR crap!?
