x-type Auto replacement
Discussion
Just been told by Jaguar that my 51 x-type 2.5 litre auto needs a new gearbox for £3740!! I couldn't believe this. Can anyone help with the following symptom?
Car runs fine and accelerates, however, when a decent amount of acceleration is applied say at around 40mph the engine revs rise but the gearbox appears to slip, if you take your foot off and slow down and it's fine. Seems to go through the gears fine and I have taken it up to 60 no problem suggesting the gears can all be selected. There was a note on the cars computer that there was 'a gearbox fault' a couple of days ago but this has now gone - is this a software error then?
The service centre said their computer suggested the box was knackered and was not selecting gears. They also noted the box oil smelt 'burnt. (Apparently it is never checked in a Jag service is this true? I can’t believe it? Car was only serviced 2 months ago)
The car has only done 40,000 miles from new I have owned it all this time and it has a full Jag service history. To say I am peeved is an understatement since the car can only be worth a few grand more than the box anyway.
Anyone else had a similar problem on their box that was fixed rather than replacing the whole box!! I know that the gearbox is a complicated item with many components surely one of these may have failed? I am based in south Essex anyone know of a good gearbox specialist around here?
All advice gratefully received.

I think you will find that the car has a JATCO auto box and this problem has been well publicised in the Telegraph. It's the same box in the Mondeo as well I believe. If you go to the Telegraph main page, click on Motoring then Honest John and do a search you will find that he recommends a company who specialises in the repairs of these boxes much much cheaper than a Jaguar dealer, who is only interested in selling you a new gearbox. If you can't find what you want, you can drop him a line - I have nothing but praise since both times I have written they have replied with the answer in less than 24 hours.
Sometimes just replacing the fluid can make the world of difference, however it seems more terminal as the history seems to show.
I would definately get a second opinion, but also I would definately persue Jag for a full replacement seeing as you have had the car from new. Either that a worst do a deal with Jag HQ, say to them you'll pay the labour if they pay for a new 'box?
Good luck.

Jaguar have just said they will pay for 75% of the total. What annoyed me is that on questioning before my complaint the service engineer said it was very rare only ever seen a few before etc etc. However, it appears to be a known problem with those boxes! He admitted this when I questioned him today.
ie he was taking me for a mug. But to be fair to him he was the one who put the call into Jag HQ when he sensed my irritation.
75% for a 6 yr old gearbox. That's pretty good on the face of it - things do break and I am well out of waranty, do I want to go round the houses getting other indys looking at the box to shave another couple of huundred off? no I don't think so.
Thanks for all your suggestions though guys - really helpful.
Think I'll get it done and then time to offload the car with a spanking new box - I've had it a while.
Will i get a new Jag?
