I'm trying to decide between these two colors. I've seen a lunar gray xkr and looks great. I've only seen the slate in pictures and also looks great but some pictures show a bit of a purplish tone to it. Anyone seen the xkr in slate? Any comments on looks? How does it hold up - dust, fading, swirl marks, resale? Thanks

The slate grey is FAR better than the lunar grey. Lunar is so so. The slate highlights the design elements of the car much better and allows the curves to have more contrast. There is also better definition between the chrome accents that surround the windows and the body color. You really notice it in the rear windows where the increased contrast shows off the lines of the car much better. When yo u put a light smoke tint on the windows of a slate car, the chrome accents come out very pronounced and the shape of the car actually improves in my opinion. It also really highlights the "humps" in the rear wheel wells. Also the side vents show more contrast and the details of the front grill come out better. Slate is clearly the choice.

When you see them side by side it is really obvious. The lunar just looks "inbetween" and doesn't make nearly the statement the slate

Downside... its a byatch to keep clean but worth it. Not nearly as bad as black but not as easy as silver. Problem with silver is that it really hides the contrasts and doesn't show the details of the body.

Of course, I am highly biased and prefer another slate grey.... But slate grey is the THE best color for an XK and and XKR

Lunar for me as I'm not really a fan of the 'contrast' of the chrome accents. Each to their own. While the slate is a great colour, I feel it looks to 'heavy'.

Thanks for the replies. The pics are great. The slate looks darker and the lunar gray looks lighter than what I was imaging in the pictures that triple 777 posted.

I'd go for slate too. It just suits the car perfectly!!!! Looks great with black interior, as well with upper black and lower tan (don't know what Jag calls it). And with dark wood as well as aluminium.

Klee, the lunar pic is taken under bright lights, indoors with a bit of camera overexposure. And the slate pic, outside on a very wet, gloomy day in the UK. Wish I could find an awesome pic I took of a Lunar outside, it looked fantastic. Unlike the quartz which it replaced, Lunar has far more depth. Both colours are mighty fine, but with any car I have bought to date, I have always needed to se the colours I am considering in the metal first, they can look very different to the brochure.

More SLATE.

QUARTZ replaced (similar to Lunar)

I have seen both at close quarters and while the car looks great in either colour, Lunar is a bit more off beat, as if you are trying to look like the Ark Royal. The Slate looks quite fantastic, though I'm sure much better clean.

Nah, you want to buy it in black, then it really looks good.

Sorry the quality isn't that great, I forgot to take a camera so these were just shot on my phone.

These were at a Guy Salmon's Ascot organised driving day yesterday. They had a quite a few XKs and XKRs in various colours. Sorry I didn't check out the actual shades of the grey and silver ones. For me it would have to be the metallic black, with the cream leather. The ali interior was OK in the XKs but I wasn't keen on it in the XJRs. For the XK's I'd still like to see an option for all those panels to be dressed in leather. Like with my XK150.

Maybe I'm biased hehe

but no so much that I would like to see in XKR in Cornish Grey. nono

Do you mean Ebony or do you mean Midnight, when you say black?

Is that your XK150? If so I take my hat off to you. What a beautiful car, and in fantastic company. 3.4 or 3.8? Had much to do to it?

That is also what we in the building trade refer to as a nice gaff. Where did you say it was?

Now, I was hoping no one was going to ask me that question. I didn't check the details on the car as the time. I then looked at the website yesterday and realised that they do 2 blacks and I'm not sure which one it was.

Yepp, the 150 is my toy. bow
It's a 3.4SE.
The opportunity to grab a few pictures of it with the new versions was too tempting. Sadly I wasn't thinking straight when I left home and forgot to take a proper camera. Also they were just packing up when brought the 150 around so I didn't get much of a chance. Right at the end there actually 5 modern ones but I couldn't get a clear shot before the delivery driver started taking them away.

I bought the car in pretty much that condition. So I'm just needing to do minor work to keep her nice. Like she doesn't have her rear bumpers at the moment, they're off being rechromed.

I'm afraid the gaff isn't mine. I might even be prepared to swap the 150 for it, the place is quite nice.

It's Great Fosters (www.greatfosters.co.uk/) in Egham.

Cheers

Yes, some day I would like one of them. I just can't get into the 120's and 140's. Physically as well as mentally.

Do you find it quite practical?

I know it divides opinions but I prefer the lines of the 150. My original reason for choosing the 150 were the single piece windscreen, I wasn't sure how well I'd get on with the split screen. And the standard disc brakes. As well as preferring the looks. As I looked more I also found that the 150 is quite a bit roomier inside. The 150 also has the 'B-Type' heads, which give much better load down torque. The power and torque figures are the same as the earlier 'C-Type' head but peak torque comes in 1K rpm lower down. With the 150s there is also the possibility of looking at the 150S with the straight port head and triple carbs. The later 3.8L version is then the engine which was dropped into the E-Type.

Is it practical. Yes, I think so, or it was to the euro tw*ts changed the rules on carrying children and seat belts. I've got two boys, aged 8 & 6. When I bought the car 18 months ago there was no way I could have driven an XK8 convertible with them both in the back. I tried! Yes they fitted reasonable well in the back of the 150. At the tail end of last season the elder one started to complain about the amount of space in the back. He normally sits behind me, so I guess we'll try swapping the boys over in the back this year. I don't expect to be able to use the car as a four seater after this year.

I haven't had the chance to take her away for a weekend with just the wife and shoot off to a nice hotel somewhere, so I can't comment on luggage space for a trip like that, but I would think it would be find. You just might need to choose different suit cases as the boot it not very tall. We have been away for a weekend at the out laws complete with the kids and we managed all the luggage needed for that trip OK.

She has no trouble at all keeping up with modern traffic conditions. Even when your not stuck in traffic jams Mine is an early 150 with the original round brake pads, I don't find these a problem on the road. They'll haul the car down from any speed I've ever driven her at with ease and are certainly able to match the braking of many modern cars, if not her latter day equivalents. I run her on cross plies, which are very different to modern low profile tyres, they tend to follow imperfections in the road more and you can drift her any time you want. In beautifully controllable slides.

As for fuel economy, I'm not sure. I had one pretty fast motorway run from Berkshire to Billericay and back at the start of December where I reckon I was averaging low to mid 20s mpg.
