hi,

All early S-Types are prone to knocking from the front end, most common causes in order are.
1, front anti-roll bar 'D' bushes
2, front anti-roll bar droplinks
3, front lower balljoints

Any good main agent or independent should be able to diagnose this in no time at all, less than half an hour.

I had the same problem on my S type, when I first got it. An annoying knocking on a bumpy surface, as said here the Drop links were the culprit. Now had 2 done on mine, last time I struggled to get them up here in Newcastle, manufacturers couldnt source them, ended up getting them in the states. Problem sorted.

Watch out for knockings though, I have been through 4 bushes of different varieties. Mainly on the back end, for some reason Jaguar use the nastiesest cheapest and most useless parts on occasion, especially bushes. The only consolation is there cheap to replace !

On early S Type the front anti roll bar can actually wear out of round, you need to change the bar and the bushes. I must have changed hundreds of them. If this is the case the garage that checks it wont detect any movement in the drop links at all. If there is movement in the drop links obviously try them first, and as others suggest check for lift in the bottom ball joints cos thats common to, but that doesnt usually make any sound. The worn anti roll bar gives a distinctive noise any Jaguar dealer or specialist should spot it easily.
