15 around town
20 on a 90 ish motorway run
overall I reckon I get around 17/18
By the way worth every penny.
Same here. I'd add that if you drive like a fairy on a motorway then you can see such dizzy heights as 23mpg.
A 330 ci coupe parked itself 10 ft from my rear bumper on the motorway the other day, I was doing 90, he wanted to go faster, it was funny watching him get smaller in the rear view mirror as I accelerated away from him........intoxicating
For my V8XJR:
Motorway cruising (5th gear) around 22-24
Urban 17-18
Pushing on in Sport mode (ie supercharger wailing) don't ask. I flicked the instant mpg screen on one time while flooring it from 20mph through to 120mph and it sank from 20 down to 7mpg in no time!
But worth every penny. My 50k miler cost £10.5grand so I treat the petrol as a cost of driving one of the best cars ever made.
As one poster pointed out, pulling away from other "quick" cars is a great experience. In the real world there is little that can keep up when you floor it in the XJR. Its traction off the line means its 1/4 mile time is around the high 12s but from a rolling start anywhere from 20mph up its figures through to 130 are other worldly.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure most of us owners can't afford them either!

Thanks groomi, I keep considering selling my series 2 to fund an XJR but its such a good one i know i'd never have the like again.

Don't do it. I regret the day I traded in my near immaculate XJ40 Sovereign for the XJR. It's not that I regret gettign the XJR, just that I should have pimped myself out so I could afford both!

Picked my black/black XJR up yesterday and same thing happened, some muppet in a Merc - I had totally forgotten how quickly it gathers speed - needless to say he game up. And all the time it deafly quiet, total brilliance.
I've had mine for 2 months now, have had all the tensioners done as precaution (ouch)but did find 2 cracked ones so good investment.
try not to worry about MPG, but still difficullt not to have a look, I average about 18-19 MPG, I went to Mallory last Sunday and hit the dizzy heights of 20.7 MPG, but that may be offset, cos I may have been truvelo'd on the A14 on the way back, paying too much attention to the road I suppose.

Hmmm. Since purchasing mine nearly 2 years ago I have used 1 of the 2 trip computers to record my mpg over the 20,000 miles I have done. Firstly I should say that my trip under calls the figures by around 5%, so while the figures are 16ish, the actual number is around 16.75mpg. I budgeted for 15mpg when I bought the car, so I look upon it as being more than 10% up on budget ! (cash in the bank !).
my 2001 XKR 4.0 turned in 25 mpg on the weekend, 60 miles of tootling along at 75mph and the rest at 55-90+ whilst in convoy with my mates 996 3.4 C4 tip
quite suprised at the economy. the only thing i noted was that the trip computer stated an average of 22mpg for the journey, but calculating by hand revealed the trip was under reading. 194 miles using 35L of fuel.
around town depending on traffic its anything between 16-19mpg.

A) Urban - 13-14mpg
B) On a Motorway run 20-23mpg
C) Combined - 17-ish mpg
Then what combined MPG do you get driving however you want - 15-ish mpg!
I still think mine drinks a bit more than some of your cars out there... Not concerned because it costs more, but mostly slightly worried something isn't quite right with it...
For example, how about this simple test? Switch the trip computer to instantaneous mpg. Pull away gently from a stop. I get single figures, even down to 4mpg!

Need to be more scientific than that. The mpg curve when going slowly is just as bad as when going very fast at high revs as the distance you're travelling (and the computer is estimating all of this because you've reset it) is so small.
Just cheer yourself up with this thought - your mpg is at its absolute worst when you're stationary

I know that's a VERY unscientific way of doing things, but it's a convenient (and flawed, but flawed in the same way for every car) way of comparing mpg different (X308 V8 XJR) cars get.Just cheer yourself up with this thought - your mpg is at its absolute worst when you're stationary
