morning,

a few words on the car first. the XKR is lovely, great performance, fuel consumption is terrible around town in stop start traffic but actually fine on the motorway. it is refined, comfortable but yet sporty enough when pressing on. excellent car

a couple of issues which i noticed yesterday and hasn't occured before the temp dial went from its usual position to the 3/4 position when the engine speed increased..
i was wondering if this was dreaded water pump on its way out?

this morning the wife commented on the fact that at 80mph the temp dial gets closer to the red, at 50mph the temp starts to drop and sit just above 1/2.

i'm going to phone up the local jag dealership and get the car sorted asap.not to worried as the car has the jag warranty, but i am concerned at the temp rising.

also the car has started making some squealing noises on startup when its been started for the first time in the morning. aux belts perhaps?

any other reasons as to why it could be over heating and making squealing noises?

Cheers

Sounds like the thermostat is on it's way out, best get it changed ASAP along with the water pump. Otherwise it could get very expensive.

IIRC, there was a Technical Service Bulletin that covers the water pump for that year. The water pump impellers where coming apart and where supposed to be swapped out- white plastic impeller water pump for a black one. A main dealer might be able to tell you if that work was ever done.

XKs are also known for developing air pockets in the cooling system if there is a leak or they aren't filled properly, they need to have a bleeder cap removed when filled so that the incoming coolant forces the air out.

That's as far as my knowledge takes me, hope it helps.

thanks for the replies,

Wife phoned me to tell me that the car over heated on the way to work. she lucky switched off and waited awhile for the car to cool. she has called out jag assist so hopefully we can find out what the problem is.

Get the problem fixed before you cause any damage. It might just be a temperature sensor issue.

The other commetns were along the right lines ref water pump and thermostat, XKr's also suffered from the coolant feed/ return hoses for the heater splitting. Have the dealer pressure test the system for you, the hoses are inexpensive, but the labour is involved, as the super charger and throttle have to be removed, not something the AA can do if you break down on the side of the road.

With ref to the squealing noise on start up, there was also a TSB ( not sure of the number ) covering the super charger drive belt, tensioner pulley, and belt alignment, in some cases the A/C compressor was out of alignment, causing the belt to run out of true. Have the dealer check it out, it could also be the aux belt making a noise....just so you know.

Melhook,

thank you very much for the information, the car is fixed and back to rude health. I am going to book the car into the dealership next week so thay can investigate the squealing noise on start up.

cheers

hi
update : the squealing sound seems like it might be supercharger drive belt, does anyone know if this is covered under the extended jag cover? the sound isn't loud enough to worry about but doesn't cause any running issues. i'm going to get it checked out anyway hopefully it will be all sorted end of next week.

got to say i like the service you get from jag dealerships and love the car.

cheers

I would not think so.
A bit like you would not expect brake pads to be covered.

thanks for information, and seems like that is case. according to my local jag dealeship its not the supercharger drive belt. and its going to cost £355 to replace the belts that are causing the noise. what i don't understand is if the supercharger or any other belt is making a noise outside of its normal characteristics and at that point in time it doesn't need replacing according to the servicing schedule then surely that should be replaced?

could it be that the belts are to loose (ie the tensioner) is on the way out?

cheers

You only have 2 belts on the engine, the super charger belt, and the FEAD belt ( Front End Auxiliary Drive ), ask the dealer to check that there is not a TSB relating to the super charger belt, although it will probably no longer be covered under Jag warranty, at least you will know that the job is done right. How much are the parts ? The Jag time to change these belts isnt very long, maybe an hour, and in real terms takes alot less. Unlikely that the tensioner on both of these has gone but is possible, unfortunately its hard to diagnose over the net, you'll just have to trust the dealer.

update, dealership picked up the full cost of the belts and tensioner. apparently the tensioner was worn which meant the belts were running out of alignment.

the dealer ship was only going to cover half the costs, but in the end they picked up all the costs. the service i received was good.

the car is awesome, got a 400 mile trip planned for the weekend so i get the chance to stretch the cars legs properly and see what the car is like on a longer drive.
