DIY XJR (4-litre V8 - x308) oil change
Discussion
Access is easy. Please remember saftey 'tho, use proper axle stands, firm level ground 'an all that. I've enjoyed your XJR posts in the past.....
I've found you can reuse the sump plug sealing washer, last time I tried to buy a replacement washer the local Main Stealer had none in stock!
I'd suggest you change the oil and filter more often than the reccommended 10k intervals, and also consider having the transmission and rear axle oil changed, even though they are "sealed for life", it can and IMO, should be done at the same intervals as the previous X300.

that's exactly why I'm asking, because I want to change the oil in between the normal service intervals. thanks for the tips.

regarding the transmission and rear axle oil, that's not something i can do myself, is it? how much should an indy charge for that? btw, what were the intervals for changing these on the x300?
I change engine oil using Morris 5/40 full synthetic every 6/7k.
You could probrably change the diff oil yourself, I used a industrial vacuum cleaner to suck out the old oil via a tube down the filler hole(there's no drain plug) into a sealed container. Amazingly, this worked a treat.
On the XJR you'll need to remove the rear anti roll bar to access the filler hole.
Any garage ought to be able to do this for you, or you could buy a cheap oil transfer pump from a yacht chandelers
Refill with 1.9 litres of either Shell Spirax EP 90 GL5 gear oil or for max protection use a EP 75/90 synthetic
You'll have the MB box in your XJR, which I'm not farmiliar with. I think there is a tempoary dipstick fitted to refil this one. For an ordinary XJ with the ZF gearbox, the gearbox oil really has to be changed by a garage with the Jaguar WDS computer. The oil level has to be precise to avoid shift problems and has to be done whilst monitoring the box temperature on the WDS.
I was charged 3 hours labour for the gearbox oil and filter change, this included a short road test too, on my XJ8. I don't know what oil you will need but if it's the same Esso LT as mine, try to source some yourself as Jaguar dealers charge £23 / litre!
From memory, X300 gearbox and filter change was every 30K and diff every 20k.
