X308 XJR gearbox error warning
Discussion
My 2000 XJR has developed a gearbox fault, the error only comes on when the gear selector passes from drive through neutral into reverse or back from reverse into drive, when it does happen I get a two stage amber error warning saying "gearbox error" and then "gearbox temperature high" and the car sticks in first gear, if I switch the ignition off the fault goes away, there is no other adverse problems with the gearbox whilst driving, the error doesn't happen every time it just leaves it long enough for me to think it's been cured
I've had the gearbox fluid changed and a new filter fitted so I'm guessing it's a faulty sensor but does anyone else have any ideas or is it a trip to the main dealer.

I'm not 100% sure but think the temp sensor may be an integral part of the mercedes transmission internal wiring harness, will look it up on my jtis cd when i get home 2mor,
Probably gonna need a trip to a garage/dealer so they can hook it up to there diagnostic machine though
Hope this may help

My '51' reg XJR did that when I had it, then the next day I couldn't stop the wipers, even with key out and locking it so disconnected the battery overnight to stop the wipers going. Next day reconnected battery and both faults had gone away never to return.
Spoke to dealer who spoke to Jaguar and they said by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery all systems had re-set themselves.
Might be worth a try, doesn't cost anything.
Was also told that if the gear selector is moved too quick it can put the error light on.

The gear shift movement is worth knowing because it's normally when changing out of neutral at traffic lights etc that the error occurs rather than from park or shifting between drive and reverse when parking.
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions, I'll pop it down to the main dealer later this week and see what they diagnose.

I never do that, put it in drive when I set off and park when I get where I'm going which most people do as far as I'm aware. Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions, I'll pop it down to the main dealer later this week and see what they diagnose.
So my XJR has now been to the main dealers and had the codes checked then removed and they just re-appeared, the car has 2 months independent (not Jaguar) warranty left on it so it's having a re conditioned gearbox fitted next week.
Thanks for the suggestions and advice, glad I didn't just ignore it now and end up with the bill personally after the warranty had run out, will be keeping car until Xmas but if anyone fancies treating themselves to an XJR for Christmas let me know nearer the time.
cheers
Dave
