I need a 2nd hand diesel car which will keep me reasonably safe and comfortable for 25000 miles per year, but has a bit of character and some mild sporting pretensions. It's got to be a diesel.
I'm considering a Jaguar X-type or an Alfa JTD. I have about £6000 to spend, maybe a little more. What do you think?

Having owned an X-type for a couple of years, I can't say a bad thing about them. Bearing in mind you will be spending a lot of time in the car, you will need to make sure you find them comfortable. The 'Sport' model of the X-type has narrower, more supportive seats at the hip, so if you are larger than average it may be better to look at the 'SE' model, which has more of a classic seat. I would highly recommed you only look at X-types which have cruise control and auto climate, trip computer, which will be of great use to you, here again the 'SE' models tend to be higher specs. Your budget maybe a bit low, but if you can plump a 2004MY car which is after they had a tweak and make it a 2.2D you will be a happy chappie for sure.

As for the Alfa, don't know anything about them................
