Hi there

I have a 2001 XJ8 Soveriegn and I wanted to know what the legality is of having a 'leaping cat' hood ornament fitted to the front of the bonnet? I have heard somewhere that its illegal if its a fixed one and legal if its one that can spring back. I have also heard that both are illegal.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Many thanks

Strictly speaking in the UK a bonnet mascot is illegal unless originally fitted by the manufacturer. This is because a factory fitted item will have passed all the relevent safety tests.

A spring-loaded mascot in itself is not deemed safe unless tested in situ on a particular vehicle. I don't believe any mascots were officially tested and fitted for the X308.

Having said that it is quite common for owners to retro-fit mascots on Jags. I did this on my old XJ40. As yet I have not heard of anyone ever being pulled up because of it.

This should answer your questions:

The Jaguar leaper is not illegal to mount after type approval but if someone should ever be injured by it you open yourself up to legal action. Spring loaded with plasic break-away bolts would probably be in order if someone really wants to install one in Britain or Europe.

Thank you all so much for taking time to answer this post - I really do appreciate it. It seems to be a bit of a grey area and probably not one thats worth getting involved with.

A leaper should be manditory...if someone was unfortunate enough to make a mess all over the front end, I'd have thought the chances of them taking legal action would be rather minimal, if yer gonna mow down a pedestrian at least do it properly hehe

Relating to the style crime post; all Jag-Wars have the leaper in the USA. Does that confirm the point?
