The old-man is looking at getting an X308 XJ. Found one - a Jan 2000 3.2 with 53K miles & full Jag service history for £5200. I know that Nikasil engines were produced until Sept 2000. I know some forums state Aug 1999, but apparently the real date is the later one - ready for the 2001 model year. So the 3.2 we've found is a Nikasil. Should we steer clear, or can they be OK? Cheers.

Hi,

I am currently looking at XK8's and had similar issues. The Nikasil issue only affected cars that used the high sulphur fuel that was common in the UK in the late 90's. As of Jan 2000 this fuel wasn't used anymore so if the car is a Jan 2000 it would be fine. A lot of people seem to think that the Nikasil engines are actually better and will last longer so I would have no issues with any car post 2000.

A Dealer Blow-by test will give you a good idea how good the Nikasil engine is. For my XK8 the readings are 0-40 Lpm is a pass ... but realistically above 20 and its probably time to find another example.
