i've recently decided that now is the time to buy a jag, a 'modern classic' model too. ie a daimler double six. this will be pretty much for daily use too. (straight jacket anyone?!)

i've got my eye on a 1986 model, and i was wondering if there's anything i can look out for without the help of a professional inspection service? or should i spend £150 on an inspection?

Obviously you pay for a thorough inspection by a specilist. You know what the problem is, rust all over the shop. Engine rebuilds are expensive partly because there is so much of it; 12 sets of everything.

I give this advice. I don't take this advice of course. No, I've bought without any inspection and with a minimal one. In my experience all old cars self destruct unless you feed them a constant supply of money.

Why not go for an X300 V12?

Or even, as I would as I'm mad, an XJ40 V12.

all comes down to finding a car with a decent lpg conversion. running a 5.3 or 6.0 V12 as my daily commuter (50 miles of very slow london traffic) every day on unleaded will have me boosting BP and Shell's profits even further!

If you get a seriesIII double six please please please dont convert it to LPG, you'll regret it late on. If you are doing the slow traffic thing I suggest you go for a six cylinder model, I have a 3.2 XJ6 for my daily commute of 110 miles around the M20/M25/A12 and I find that it does OK. Admitedly you do have to use the J gate to choose a lower gear to get the old girl rolling up hills.

I have a 6.0 V12 which is fine on the open road, about 20ish to the gallon but around town I get 7-8 in stop start traffic.

Let us know howyou get on and good luck

Why would you regret an LPG conversion? You can still run it on petrol can't you and they say performance is the same. Just curious.

I saw an lovely XJR LPG recently...

X300 = the best XJ version bar an immaculate Series I/II or an XJ12C.

I would love an XJ12C! Tru8e, you would still be able to use petrol if you needed to. In fact I know someone who has a Broadspeed XJ12C stored in France, one day he is hoing to take me for a ride in it but he doesnt know it yet!

Yep I'd love a late XJ40 V12. I still remember Clarkson on Top Gear talking about it.

And do spend cash on a proper inspection. Spending £150 could save you thousends
