Hopefully someone here can offer me some advice!!
My XK8 went in for accident repair.
While it was in they did something to the gearbox or j gate so they could put it in neutral without electrics / having foot on brake.
Now it has come back to me. Drives brilliantly, acceleration is smooth and even, cruise control works, sports mode works.
BUT - The gear lever can be moved out of park WITHOUT foot on brake. In fact without engine running or even key in ignition come to that.
Also , to engage D there is only just enough travel on the stick.
And most annoying of all - the stick cannot be moved over to the far side of the J - Gate for "drive to" mode of 2nd 3rd 4th gears.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this - is it likely to be some "mode" that could be disengaged if I knew what button to press / selector to shift etc or is it more likely to be a major fault and big expense?
Big thanks to those who take the time to read all this, and bigger thanks to those who can tell me the answer!!!

There is a star shaped screw head on the gearbox surround at the top left above the number 2 gear position (I think), unscrew that and you need to put your key in there to move it out of park.

Maybe that is jammed? Needs turning off?

Sounds like the park release solenoid is struck or broken and yes it can be exspensive. Take it back to your repairer.

If past experience is anything to go on, there is a chance that the people who have been in contact with your pride and joy, have no idea about auto gearboxes with park locks. They have probably tugged at the gear lever and broken something. I talk to them first, but maybe not get them to repair it !! Maybe take it to a dealer or your local indie.

Go see Elite Jags in Derby, but I would let your Insurance Company and repair shop know in writing that a fault has existed from collection and needs rectification.
