Noticed lately that when turning (with radio turned off) there is a noise coming from the steering colum. I can only describe the sound like two balloons being rubbed together. Not a mechanical sound, no clunking, power steering feels the same. It just sounds like a fluid/pressure sound so I suppose it could be power steering/fluid related. I'm not overly worried as the car is warranty covered and is displaying no issues as a result, it is something that just recently started happening.

Has anyone else known or heard similar? The car is an 04 2.0d

Thanks

Stig, the X-Type has been known to have a steering rack problem. Covered under warranty, so may be worth getting it to your dealer.

any more light on what this issue is? I spoke to the local dealers engineer about the noise and he insists power steering systems transmit noise like this (which they dont)

All works fine, no loss of steering or anthing just a squeeling type noise (suspect it could also be the tyres)

So what are the known x-type steering issues?

Thanks

Seals in the steering rack. They remove the rack and strip it down, renew the saels with a modified type. The pinion seals dry out, the modified ones are of a different material that dont dry out as easily.

How do I go about getting them to diagnose if thats the fault. Already they've told me that the noise is a standard noise powersteering will make. ERm really? And how come it doesnt happen all the time, at different ambient temps, sometimes when warm out others cold out, some times from start up others not at all...
