Oil level x-type
Discussion
I went to have a look at an x-type 2.5 at the weekend that had done 80k. The oil level was a good cm below the min and when asked re this the owner advised he doesnt touch the oil between services (so it was last filled around 9.5k ago as it needs a service now).
Whilst this does show that the car doesnt use that much oil, I am also a little concerned about what potential damage could be done by being run every day with well under the minimum oil.
I dont want a car that will prove a liability or mammothly expensive to run - is this one best avoided? The price is reasonable having regard to the fact it needs a service.

If it's that far below the min. mark I'd guess it will need around 1.5 to 2 litres to fill to the correct level.
That suggests it's burnt (providing it's not leaking of course - and was filled correctly at the last service) up to 2 litres over 9k, which I'd have concerns over.
I'd be equally as concerned with the fact the current owner can't be arsed to keep the oil level topped up. What remains in the sump is undoutably heavily contaminated, and probrably well below spec by now, and the low level is simply making what little remains in the sump work far harder and degrade even quicker.
Running on minimal quantaties of shagged out oil exposes engine components to chronic wear, overheating, oil seal failure and the potential for major expense later on.
10k between oil changes is already pushing the boundary of what's sensible IMO, particurlarly if the car is filled with a minimum spec oil in the first place. Running at some 25% below capacity is asking for trouble.

If it is running below minimum at the moment, then it would mean it has probably run at below minimum levels for periods in the past as well. This is of course not a good sign.
Also if he can't be arsed to even keep the oil topped up, then is he likely to have maintained other stuff as well?
