quick question regarding MPG on the various models...

what do they get on a motorway run and round town?

any chance of around the 30 mark?
or is that pie in the sky stuff?!

Which XJ6 ?

My 94 model (an X300) does about 18 around town. 25 on the motorway, 28 if you are stuck in a traffic jam that is moving at a constant 50. Not sure it would do 30 on the back of a trailer, it's never been there to find out

The new all Ali X350 models are probably much more economical.

would rather like a xjr but think a 3.2 would suit our needs more!

My 3.2 XJ8 averages 27 to 28 MPG on a long trip cruising at 60 or so. It's never used round town or driven really hard so I have no idea what a more realistic figure for day to day use would be. I've seen an average of 32 MPG only once - and that was cruising at 50 on a deserted motorway just to see what it could do.

My previous 3.2 XJ6 was slightly worse and usually managed 25 to 27 on a run, but again really trying at 50 the average crept to 34.

So no, 30 MPG from an X300 or X308 is impossible, but it might be a realistic figure in a later aluminium-bodied car.

Surely once the thing's up to speed the weight is immaterial?

(However I can see that it takes more fuel to get a heavy car to X mph than a light one.)

Roads are perfectly flat, every time you go up a hill in a heavier car you'll use more fuel.


I got 29MPG out of my XJ6 the other day on steady motorway run. Which is the best I've ever noticed.

XJR (X308) - Motorway: 23.5mpg, Town: 18mpg

4.0L Sovereign (XJ40) - Motorway: 26mpg, Town: 19mpg

That's the problem, accelerating all that mass. The X350 is much, much lighter, has better aerodynamics and higher gearing all of which contibute to better economy. I've heard 35 MPG is easily achieved on a run with some care.
