S Type 3.0 petrol automatic cough!

Hi wonder if anyone can through any light on my problem. My S Type 2002 3.0L petrol auto - as i start to move from a stationary position it seems to cough and jolt just for a split second, then it is fine but between 24-30 MPH it seems to make a parfing noise!!! The rest of the time it purrs like a kitten. Im taking it into a garage but would like opinions on what it could be as you cant always trust what a garage will tell you

On an x-type 3.0 automatic, something similar. Check the air intake pipe to the ECU as it is quite cheap rubber and prone to splitting. That confuses the air-intake mix and therefore can be responsible for the spluttering you refer to. (just take the plastic cover off the top of the engine - allen keys at the ready - and inspect any black rubber pipes you see!). Hope that helps to rule out that particular one!
