Hi all,
Am thinking of buying and XKR from a main dealer. It has a high mileage and although I went for a test drive today and the salesman mentioned a few things that needed sorting (aircon, a bush and broken switch) do you think it would be a good idea to get the RAC to have a look at it? I know they'll fix the various things and give it a service if I choose to go ahead but an independent survey may bring other things to light, wouldn't you think?
Thanks for any input

If you're buying through the Jaguar approved car scheme the car will come with a year's warranty.
It's never a bad idea to get a second opinion though - an inspection may reveal some other problem that will make either change your mind over that particular car or give you some bargaining points to get a better deal.

If you do decide to have an inspection done find out exactly what you're paying for. I'd want to see a reasonable length road test and detailed assesment and valuation of the car, taking into account the condition and mileage in the current state of the market - not just a tickbox list confirming the courtesy light come on when you open the door for example.

IMO the only real way to asses a car is to view and drive as many examples as you can. That way you'll become familiar with what's available, how much you can expect to pay and have a chance to do some miles in the car you think you want before you actually buy it. When the right car comes up you'll then have the experience to make a confident choice which will put you in a better position when it's time to start negotiations.

I'd take along a level-headed mate if I were you. If you're buying a car you really want and not just a box on wheels to get around in it's too easy to fall in love with with the first one you see and drive, end up buying it and regretting it afterwards. If you make a mistake or pay too much remember it's always much easier to buy a car than sell one - especially when the second hand car market is on it's knees as it is at the moment.

Given 1 in 3 used cars have supposedly been in an accident of some sort I think an inspection is money well spent for a bit more peace of mind, especially if you are going to be handing over quite a lot of beer tokens.

The inspectors do seem to cover their ar**s so you should get a worst-case view, but you need to bear that in mind when you see the results.

Just bought an XKR. Will be delivered on Sunday. Just like Christmas when a child. Probably paid too much for it, but the company seems like they sort them well, so we'll see
