Tyre wear on X-Type
Discussion
Hello all, I've had my X-Type (2.5 AWD) for about 18 months, and the tyre wear seems really poor - in particular the fronts. Basically, the inside of the tyres is worn down to the canvas while the outer tread still has about 7mm left. I did have a problem with the tyres losing pressure (could sometimes be 10psi in 24hrs) & rather than refurb the wheels, I've replaced with new ones complete with tyres. The front tyres have needed replacing every 6 months.
Could the air escaping the tyres be the problem or does it sound like tracking? Or could it be something more serious (AWD system)?
I know it's heavy at the front, and I do expect the tyres to wear, but to wear like they have seems wrong.
Suggestions welcome - I'm in the NW if anyone can recommend a place to check the tracking or look at the car. Preferably an indy rather than a main dealer.
Cheers folks
Dave

Suggest you try to find a suspension and alignment specalist and have a 4 wheel full alignment check and set done rather than just give the work to your local tyre monkeys or main dealer. Most main dealer bodyshops farm out alignment work now and rarely do it themselves to the very best standard.
Try and find somebody who sets up cars for trackdays for example. Is there a branch of Protyre near you? My local one has an excellent reputation and the guys there really know what they are doing.
Any 4WD car is harder on tyres and alignment is critical to reduce wear and maintaing handling - which is what you bought a 4WD car for in the first place.
If alignment is out you'll notice a big difference when it's set correctly.

This happens whether the wheels are aligned or not. Both mine and shnozz's 2.5 awd's did the same thing. I took mine back to the dealer and they checked all the alignment and it was only a fraction out. I'm currently running Vredestien Sessantas on it though and they seem to be wearing much better.
[quote=northwest monkey]Thanks chaps I'll definitely get it looked at - I do expect the tyres to wear faster than a 2WD, but after 6k miles and only on the inner edge of the front tyres definitely suggests a problem.
I'm on my second x2.5 sport, my first 2003my went through a front set in 12k wearing out the inner edge on 17in 225 pirelli p zero, as an X type AWD owner you must regularily check your fronts by turning the wheels lock to lock to check inners. My dealer has seen many thread bare inners over the years with perfect tread on the outer edge. Jaguar did change the toe in/toe out alignment from about 2004, make sure your car is set up to the latest recommendations, my current X 2.5 SPORT MY2006 has just passed 20k on 18in 225 pirelli p zero nero and they are not worn on the inners
