XJ8 J-Gate Lights

The lights underneath the J-gate on my 2000 XJ8 appear to have gone, meaning that there is no illumination of the gate when the headlights are on. Any idea of what is under there and how easy it will be for me (a complete amateur at these things) to fix myself?

The J gate quadrant is not illuminated when the lights are on. You should have a red lamp indicating what position the lever is in all the time.

There's nothing on the JTIS - I've just looked for you - but IIRC, the J gate surround is an interference fit on plastic studs. Slip a length of string under each corner in turn and ease it upwards. You may have to disconnect the sport /cruise switches. The position indicator bulb is in a holder underneath.

Don't try to force the surround off or prize it up with a screwdriver - you'll crack the wood.
