i went to purchase a xjs it was a g reg and the heads had been replaced only with 4thousand miles on them but the oil colour was grey to me it looked like head gasket problems ,any idea and can you get grey engine oil.

Grey oil? Only time I've ever seen oil greyish in colour is in a wrecked engine - the particles of metal from the bearing shells suspended in the oil made it go that colour.
Head gasket failure, which may allow coolant into the oil, usually causes the oil to go a off white or brown colour accompanied with lots of sticky deposits in the cooler parts of the engine such as the cam cover.
