I have been offered a 2001 X Type 3.0 Manual froma dealer for £2895. It has 68K, full leather, Sat Nav, DVD players, Climate etc (not sure of cruise) and it seems like a real bargin - worth a punt for a 100 mile daily motorway commute? Does the engine have a cam chain or a cam belt?

Thanks

It'll have a chain.

Does the 2.5 also have a chain?

Sounds like a bargain! I love the big manual X types, great cars and yes the 2.5 has a chain.

Unfortunately the one I wanted has just been sold - typical! However, all is not lost as I have found another with the same toys, a 2.5 litre, with 60k for 2500 ono so I may have to take a hit on the extra power and go there instead!

At that sort of money I dont think you can go wrong. Mine has been great in every area (apart from depreciation...I advertised it for £4k and not a squeek). Good choice for a daily motorway hack. biggrin

I'd strongly recommend a 3.0l sport manual. I love mine - there is little discernible difference in running costs over a 2.5l and the extra power is definitely worth having!

I'm on my second 2.5 sport go for the sport better handling than se or classsic. The 3.0 and 2.5 are the same ford duratec engine. Only problem with 2001 cars they were the launch year check that all the remedial work has been done, see old X Type mails on here to see the list of things to look out for.

Duratech is the basis of the AJ-V6 engine in the X-type but jaguar added a bespoke Variable valve timing system that you won't find on any V6 Mondeo.

If anyone else is after one of these, I'm puttnig mine up for sale later this week. Just under 100k miles, but new engine at 70k under warranty.

Prefer to get the auto, will the 3 litre acceleration and sound be noticably better than 2.5? - Went out in a 2 litre and couldnt hear the engine..

How does fuel consumption compare for 2 engines: a.overall b. cruising at 80?

Does one understeer less, or would you say handling (say around a private damp roundabout) is neutral with power oversteer available in damp conditions?

Had a couple of emails since this thread was bumped... sorry the X-type sold pretty quickly.

BUT now that it's gone I wouldn't recommend anyone buy one. At least not the 4wd or manual version. Every Mondeo hire car I've driven has been a much better steer.

Must have been something wrong with yours. Mine is an absolute pleasure to own and drive.

Seconded!

I've had a AWD 2.5 saloon & a FWD 2.2d estate. Both fantastic handlers but the 2.5 had the edge. Not sure if it's a better weight distribution of the AWD or the stiffer saloon shell though.

What sort of cost involved in having timing chains replaced and when are they due?

Same for clutch

AWD versions

Any low cost performance / character enhancements available on 3 litre - eg re-map + tuned exhaust / de-cat, sports air filter and such like

Like to hear a little V6 growl rather than a 'distant sewing machine'

You can get a quad exhaust system (back boxes only) for £300 fitted, or a borla /Quicksilver exhaust for about £450. K&N filter £50, plus some simple diy on the airbox can help:
