I was looking at a nice 2005 XK8 convertible offered for sale and the only thing I didn't like about it was the hood fabric which seemed a bit lumpy and discoloured (allegedly so after having been professionally valeted the previous week). I thought I would buy the car if I could get a new hood for it so I rang up a main Jaguar dealer service department and asked how much it would cost to supply and fit new fabric...

"Are you sitting down," the parts manager asked. So I sat down.

"Four thousand pounds," he said.

"You've got that wrong, I said. I only want new fabric, not the whole assembly.

"That is for the fabric only, sir -- and it will cost about the same to fit... a total of over eight thousand pounds."

"Is that all?" I asked.

"We don't sell many of them," he said.

"You don't say... Thank you and good night."

I think the moral of this tale must be to buy a convertible with a good hood and then take better care of it than you would your babies.

Having also recently bought a used 2005 XKR, and even though the existing black top is in good shape, I was wondering what it cost to replace the exterior material (canvass?) of the convertible top. I am in the Los Angeles area and a local independent Jaguar shop said it costs about $1,500. Of course this may not be official Jaguar top but this at least sounds like a reasonable price.

The hoods are not just your average roll of canvas though, I believe they're triple layered, quilted etc. etc...
