Hi all,
i have a 2004 StypeR, and the ONLY annoying thing about the car is the size of the fuel tank, terribly small considering the engine size, long distance use etc

This is the first Jag i have owned, so a question i have wanted to ask is about the fuel gauge/DTE meter. Are they accurate? Does the DTE really reflect what is in the tank? So far i have not dared let it drop below 20 miles before filling up, which gives me a usual 230-250 mile range. What size is the tank- cannot find my manual?

Any comments?

My S-Type deseasal is 63L & one of the reasons my previous S was replaced with another diesel. At 35MPG it means I have around 450 miles before refilling.

Did you see Top Gear last night. Clarkson in an XJ 2.7D drove well beyond the display said the tank was empty, and when the tank was examined, they claim there was enough fuel to do anoth 100+ miles.

That would suggest that Jags guage / displays may air on the sid of caution?

Only had my S Type 2.7 a couple of months, display average = 35mpg. Maybe I should do it the long had method and record what I actually put in the tank?

But you really don't want to run a diesel empty or the whole system can need priming again.

it should be 69 litres.

i noticed the low fuel warning light doesn't even come on until the "range" shows less than 20, sometimes even less than 15 miles. i suspect the car would keep going even after "range" would drop to zero, but it's a bit unnerving...

incredible, that diesel jag last night, on top gear, considering jeremy wasn't even trying to drive economically (until the last couple of hundred miles).

Thanks Vladman, i have never been able to get more than 60 litres in so that suggests to me that the DTE is way underestimating the actual amount left in the tank.
Do you know if the reserve section of the fuel gauge equates to the reserve amount of fuel, or does that kick in when the needle points to the absolute empty line?

The tank in my XKR is allegedly 65 litres, the most I've put in is 64.5, so I'm guessing that not even Jaguar really know.

Same here, the most I ever managed to put in was 60.46 litres.

I don't know, but I think it's the latter - reserve kicks in once the light comes on, which happens when the needle is already well into the red zone - having said that, I'll pay particular attention next time.

I have an S Type 4.2 V8 SE, registered 31.12.03. The Handbook states:

Indicated refill capacity-E to F on fuel gauge...64.0 litres
Unindicated (reserve) capacity....................5.5 litres
Total refill capacity (advertised capacity)......69.5 litres

In my car the low fuel warning light starts to operate when the range is around 40 miles. I don't recall taking it down as low as 20 miles before refilling.

I think the most I've ever got into the tank was around 62 litres.

Hope all this helps you.

R.

The manual says that you can't run an S-Type diesel "dry" It keeps 5 litres for the circulation.
I can't think of a modern diesel that doesn't self prime, the S-Type does, err..... I'll gloss over how I know!

The Mrs has a friend with an E320CDI like hers but a year or so newer, so about a 2002 I guess. She had fun and games getting it re-primed after running out.

I've got a volvo V70 diesel and its got a 70L tank. On a number of occasions I've run it to where the "miles left" is at zero. I can then usually get upto 73L in the tank to fill it up again.

I think they all err on the side of caution these days.

Filled my S-Type diesel up on the way to the airport this AM. Took 64litres! And moreover the light wasn't on & the trip showed 60miles to go..... So even with the 5 litres reserve to protect the pumps it looks like it's a fair bit bigger than they list.

ok so i REALLY tried to run the last tank down, i went 10 miles after the computer said "0", then managed to put 64 litres in the tank by patiently filling right up to the neck, so maybe could have done another 10 miles or so if really pushed.

At least i can trust it now, and i got another 30 miles range, which is more useful.
